Island Gardens is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station in Island Gardens, east London, just north of the River Thames. It is in Travelcard Zone 2.The station is close to the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs and the River Thames. Island Gardens is a public park with a notable view across the river to the classical buildings of the former Greenwich Hospital and the National Maritime Museum, with Greenwich Park forming a backdrop. The northern entrance of the Greenwich foot tunnel is within the park.DevelopmentThe original Island Gardens DLR station was opened on 31 August 1987 as the southern terminus of the initial system. It was built adjacent to the site of the old North Greenwich railway station, the southern terminus of the Millwall Extension Railway. It was elevated with two platforms, each capable of accommodating a single car train. The station required significant rebuilding to allow the platforms to take two-car trains. The extension to Lewisham passes under the River Thames in a deep tube tunnel. This required a new station to be built slightly further away from the river, north of Manchester Road, and underground. The original station and the southern end of the connecting viaduct have since been demolished.

  • Very close by the DLR station and a short walk under the Thames from Cutty Sark. It isn't crowded usually, so it's a nice place to chill and relax and enjoy the sunshine. Unfortunately doesn't have any public toilets around, so if you need a toilet you probably need to pop into the nearest pub available.
  • Nice riverside park with a cafe and small shop. Great views across to greenwich.
  • Nice small local neighbourhood park. Great views of Greenwich and Cutty Sark across the river. Unfortunately full of kids listening to music and smoking drugs on Fri/Sat nights.
  • Nice little park by the river. Good place for afternoon walk.
  • A simple little park where the Greenwich foot tunnel appears. Has 2 cafes both serving an excellent selection of beverages and confectionery. Excellent views of Greenwich Maritime opposite. Plenty of benches to sit on a sunny day overlooking the Thames.
