Earl's Court, London

3.3
Earls Court is a district in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in central London, bordering the sub-districts of South Kensington to the east, West Kensington to the west, Chelsea to the south and Kensington to the north. The Earls Court Exhibition Centre was one of the country's largest indoor arenas and a popular concert venue until its closure in 2014.HistoryEarly historyEarls Court was once a rural area, covered with green fields and market gardens. The Saxon Thegn Edwin held the lordship of the area prior to the Norman Conquest. For over 500 years the land, part of the ancient manor of Kensington, was under the lordship of the Vere family, the Earls of Oxford and descendants of Aubrey de Vere I, who held the manor of Geoffrey de Montbray, bishop of Coutances, in Domesday Book in 1086. By circa 1095, his tenure had been converted, and he held Kensington directly of the crown. A church had been constructed there by 1104. The earls held their manorial court where Old Manor Yard is now, just by the London Underground station. Earls Court Farm is visible on Greenwood's map of London dated 1827.Railway lineThe construction of the Metropolitan District Railway station in 1865–69 was a catalyst for development. In the quarter century after 1867, Earls Court was transformed into a densely populated suburb with 1,200 houses and two churches. Eardley Crescent and Kempsford Gardens were built between 1867 and 1873, building began in Earls Court Square and Longridge Road in 1873, in Nevern Place in 1874, in Trebovir Road and Philbeach Gardens in 1876, and Nevern Square in 1880.

A lively area of London, but for those people visiting the city that are not interested in nightlife, there is not as much to do here. Good for some accommodation options, but little reason to visit o...  more »

We didn't know we chose this area because we got a good price on hotel trebovir .... Very quiet, clean and with everything you may need. The metro serves two very important ... the blue lines leading from the airport to downtown ... and the green one that comfortable with less affluence that, we used more, X go either to the Cathedral of St. Paul and in Westminster ... Why from earl's court would say it is a strategic district ... We, in the evening we always had dinner in this area ... we found a truly great pizza! " Franco Manca "and then also very original pubs ... the two that I liked most are: the pizzeria" Franco Manca "and the pastry and bakery" Paul. "... the fact remains that if I go to London I would choose the same neighborhood.

Imagine-this huge Hall and Extension have been demolished. Instead it is to be housing. From the Motor Show to Smithfield and the Royal Tournament has passed into history.  more »

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
