Dulwich Picture Gallery, London

4.4
#47 of 222 in Museums in London
Dulwich Picture Gallery is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery: it was founded in 1811 when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters “for the inspection of the public”.

Today the Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions alongside its Permanent Collection of Baroque masterpieces while staging a wide-ranging programme of public events, practical art and community engagement.

  • Puts on the most captivating exhibitions in a perfectly sized smaller space. A ticket for the special exhibition also let's you into the permanent collection (which otherwise costs £8). The cafe has table service all day. There's also a "Hut" selling drinks, sandwiches and cakes. Buy a snack and sit in the lovely grounds or in the "Pavillion" - a wood and mirrors structure reflecting views of the trees, the gallery and the people. All highly recommended!
  • Superbly curated exhibition of Tove Jansson's oeuvre. Wide-ranging and intriguing. She was always true to her principles of diversity and inclusivity.
  • A wonderful collection of great paintings. Well worth a visit. John Singer Sargent exhibition an eye opener (for me anyway) as many watercolours /Venitian scenes etc that I wasn't expecting..until this exhibition came along)
  • Beautiful John Singer Sargent Watercolours exhibition - try to see it before it goes on 8th October. Plus, lovely cake in the gardens!
  • The Gallery is located in a nice park and has a cafe and restaurant. It is a very pleasant place to relax and enjoy some art.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
