Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, London

#184 of 245 in Fun & Games in London
The National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace in south London, England is a large sports centre and athletics stadium. It was opened in 1964 in Crystal Palace Park, close to the site of the former Crystal Palace Exhibition building which had been destroyed by fire in 1936, and is on the same site as the former FA Cup Final venue which was used here between 1895 and 1914.It was one of the five National Sports Centres, run on behalf of Sport England, but responsibility was transferred to the London Development Agency (now GLA Land and Property) and is managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited, under their Better brand logo. The sports centre building was designed by the LCC Architects Department under Sir Leslie Martin between 1953–54 and is a Grade II* listed building. It has a particularly interesting interior: there is a central concourse with a complex and delicate exposed concrete frame supporting the roof, which has a folded teak lining, and to one side a series of pools, including a 50m competition pool, and a diving pool with a dramatic reinforced concrete diving platform, and to the other side a smaller sports arena.

  • It was not a particularly good experience, will not recommend you choose to visit the lodge, it ought to be demolished: (

  • This sports centre could be so much better. The spectator area is littered with bird faeces. It is so unhealthy. Do the managers not know the risk this poses to human health? Many parents with younger...  more »

  • On paper this sports center sounds great! But in reality it is terrible being a member! From the outside, the center looks dilapidated and from the moment you walk in, everything about being a member is much more complicated than it needs to be! The fast track machines are more often than not, out of service which forces you to queue with all the competitive parents and their future sporting star children - who the gym mostly appeals to! You then have to wait for the staff who have that 'couldn't care less' look stamped across their faces to swipe you in and give you a wristband. As for the facilities, yes the center offers many sports - most of which you have to pay extra for or be a member of to participate. The gym uses dated equipment and the weights area is too small meaning you have to share the space with people on their phones constantly hogging the squat rack. I used to play squash a lot with my wife but I have decided to boycott this as I was charged a pathetic penalty fee for not cancelling within 24 hours of the booking - Yes Crystal Palace sports center, other people have emergencies at work which are more important than your unbooked court! The sports center treats members like guests, not valued customers, unless you are a child participating in a tournament that puts the gym on the map. Surely the needs of the working professionals who pay hefty monthly fees should come first? I've tried twice to cancel my subscription via their 'contact us' service where they get back to you within 3 working days - I've heard nothing back... I wonder why??
  • The most terrible customer service I've come across. Why would you work for in customer service if you never smile and you're rude?? I really don't get it. The pool is nice and big 50m but they could clean it better. Changing rooms quite cold. Kids shouting too much. 20p charge for each time you use the locker. Big variety of activities on the plus side. I don't know who runs the place but they can definitely do it better. Cheers
  • Agree with others about the terrible customer service. I have tried every extension available on the contact number and it took 40 minutes before I was able to speak to anyone. The kids on reception do not do their jobs.
  • Great facilities. Great organisation. Great people. Great fun.
  • Lovely big swimming pool. Separate kids pool so you can get some good swimming done without interruptions.
