Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.

  • Greenwich at the weekend is famous for it's various markets. The Clocktower is my favourite. It's a mix of vintage clothes, vinyl records, jewellery, small items of furniture, and other assorted curio...  more »
  • Luckily we came to Greenwich by train, which meant we stumbled across this small, quirky, friendly market. Because it's small (60 stalls, at a guess), it has the feeling of being crammed with treasure...  more »
  • We stumbled upon this market by chance, it's a bit hidden. A man was holding a sign pointing to it. It's not huge, but we found it completely fascinating. The stallholders are so friendly - one of the...  more »

  • Lovely little market with very friendly stallholders. My daughter bought some 'hipster' furniture for her flat and a 'steampunk' lamp (they talk a different language these days!) And I treated myself to a beautiful 1940s necklace. All very reasonably priced.
  • A mostly vintage market with a few modern surprises. Among the various stalls is a vendor selling music, a welcome distinction from the other greenwich markets.
  • One of Greenwich's popular markets. This one, next to the Picturehouse and Rivington specialises in antiques and second hand items.
  • Very nice vintage market. You will find here books, clocks, souvenirs and lovely people.
  • Good market to buy local trinkets
