Clink Prison Museum, London

3.3
#40 of 219 in Museums in London
The oldest prison in England, operating between the 12th and the 18th centuries, Clink Prison Museum is where the slang term "the clink" originates. The museum recreates the life of prisoners through decorated cells and dungeon-like accommodations. Listen for the loud "clink" of the metal doors that gave the prison its nickname. Discover how both men and women were treated over the prison’s long history. Plan my trip to London with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • We stumbled upon this museum by accident near suffolk cathedral. The whole experience for our family of two adults and two children aged 6 &13 was really great, lots of info on the prisons of the past...  more »
  • We went here expecting it to be a lot better. It was expensive for what it was. It was basically just a walk through with posters on the wall. If you want history of prisons visit the galleries of jus...  more »
  • The Clink Prison Museum was an eye opener into what went on all those years ago. There were a lot of informative panels dotted about to read and we certainly learnt things that we didn't know before. ...  more »

  • Interesting exhibits and information boards. Quite a small museum but gives an idea of how bad conditions would have been for prisoners! Worth a visit for an hour. £7.50 entry fee seems a bit steep hence the four stars...
  • While it's cool to go to for the historic aspect, there isn't much original stuff left here and you can go through it in less than an hour, even reading everything and pondering the various exhibits. I did find it interesting that a space once considered only just big enough for a Victorian era man now has four people in it in our modern prisons. That and the "scold" were the most horrifying parts.
  • This museum is far underrated and is truly a hidden gem in London. If you come up to London by train you do qualify for the 2-for-1 entry however it is already at a reasonable price. Unlike the dungeon this is a far more educational Museum about how prisons worked in history. The museum only takes you about an hour to get through but it is completely packed with information.
  • I had a blast here! I read through a lot of reviews that made me skeptical on visiting, but I'm glad I did. There is a lot of reading to do if you want to learn anything, but it's pretty neat history. I went closer to the end of the day and wish I had a little bit more time to spend. The staff was very friendly and didn't seem to be bothered that we were there until after they had closed.
  • Amazing place, I read everything and learnt so much about the history of the Clink Police Museum. Definitely would return and I was in there for 2 hours as I wanted to experience everything. Highly recommended for adults and children.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
