Canary Wharf Tower, London

One Canada Square is a skyscraper in Canary Wharf, London. It was the tallest building in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 2010, standing at 770ft above ground level and containing 50 storeys. In late 2010, it was surpassed by The Shard (completed in July 2012) which stands at 309.6m.One Canada Square was designed by principal architect Cesar Pelli, who based the design and shape mainly on the World Financial Center and the shape of Elizabeth Tower although the developers' (Olympia and York) previous flagship projects, First Canadian Place in Toronto and the Aon Center (formerly the Amoco building) in Chicago are earlier precedents of the building shape and plan form. Unlike the precedents named, the building is clad with durable stainless steel rather than natural stone (which failed prematurely, requiring expensive repairs in several). One of the predominant features of the building is the pyramid roof which contains a flashing aircraft warning light, a rare feature for buildings in the United Kingdom. The distinctive pyramid pinnacle is at 800ft above sea level. One Canada Square is primarily used for offices, though there are some retail units on the lower ground floor. It is a prestigious location for offices and as of November 2015 was 100% let. The building is recognised as a London landmark and it has gained much attention through film, television and other media when its status was the tallest building in the United Kingdom and continues to gain attention.

  • I booked this apartment for a one night in London to attend an event and following the great stay I had in Bristol with SACO a few weeks ago, thought it worth looking at available self-catering with SACO again. There is a DLR stop nearby but we had got off a bit early. We found Trinity Tower, but it wasn't well signed on the outside and it was only by chance, I saw the SACO logo and then a Trinity sign well inside the building. The staff were great, courteous and efficient and the room was superb except for the condition of the knives which were blunt and little use. The bed was comfortable and I was delighted to find a welcome pack on arrival with the all important pint of milk in the fridge waiting for us, which is a lovely gesture. I would certainly look at booking with SACO again either here or another one of their properties.
  • Excellent receptionists, very helpful and thoughtful. Rooms are spacious and well furnished. Room service is also brilliant. Overall very nice experience. Only drawback is poor WiFi.
  • The location of the hotel was within the vicinity of the place where I'm working and to the underground station. The place is peaceful and quiet which gives you a more relaxing ambiance. The receptionists were accommodating to my needs and are very hospitable. The quality of the rooms, toilet, sheets, cabinets, kitchen and everything are commendable and was beyond my expectations. Overall, my stay was a good one and would recommend this to travelers most especially the ones that are travelling in a group/family.
  • Great location, easy access to the city center. Everyhing you need you find in the apartment. Enough internet speed. Iron in the apartment, kitchen well equipped. If you fly to the City London Airport - it is only 20 minutes to get there.
  • A very nice apartment, equipped with nearly everything you may need. Friendly, helpful staff. Offered us later checkout till 12 for free when asked. Recommended.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
