The BT Tower is a communications tower located in Fitzrovia, London, owned by BT Group. It has been previously known as the GPO Tower, the Post Office Tower and the Telecom Tower. The main structure is 177m high, with a further section of aerial rigging bringing the total height to 191m. It should not be confused with the BT Centre (the global headquarters of BT). Its Post Office code was YTOW.Upon completion it overtook the Millbank Tower to become the tallest building in both London and the United Kingdom, titles it held until 1980, when it in turn was overtaken by the NatWest Tower.History20th centuryThe tower was commissioned by the General Post Office (GPO). Its primary purpose was to support the microwave aerials then used to carry telecommunications traffic from London to the rest of the country, as part of Britain's microwave network. It replaced a much shorter steel lattice tower which had been built on the roof of the neighbouring Museum telephone exchange in the late 1940s to provide a television link between London and Birmingham. The taller structure was required to protect the radio links' "line of sight" against some of the tall buildings in London then in the planning stage. These links were routed via other GPO microwave stations at Harrow Weald, Bagshot, Kelvedon Hatch and Fairseat, and to places like the London Air Traffic Control Centre at West Drayton.

  • When walking through the streets of London I saw every now and then! It is a landmark building. It is taken when the photos were exploring the Covent Garden.

  • Amazing views!!!!! Came here for a charity with my school and 6 children. The staff were friendly and professional and love the quirky telephone boxes they have. Kids enjoyed it and loved the lift!!  more »

  • Oh my goodness. The revolving floor was so awesome. You sit down and watch London move around in front of you. It was fun to guess what different buildings were
  • It's a wonderful view when you get to the top, aided by the slowly rotating room at the top. The lift is super fast. I din't think it's a tourist attraction though as you'd need to be invited through BT.
  • Yes revolving views on London is awesome!!! But I'm pretty sure it can't be healthy sat next to so many high powered emitters. Always leave feeling weird.
  • The view of the city is great. It's the only high place in the area you can get the view of central.
  • I came for a conference run by the Marie Collins Foundation on 23rd June 2017 and, although the conference was very good, to have an hour and a half lunch in this fantastic venue, topped off the experience. The view was stunning, they rotated the viewing tower and the food and service was excellent. For a lunch time experience, this was truly amazing and thanks to all the staff who looked after us. I am going to try and come to another Conference in july, just to experience this again!!! Fabulous

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
