Baden-Powell House, colloquially known as B-P House, is a Scouting hostel and conference centre in South Kensington, London, which was built as a tribute to Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting. The house, owned by The Scout Association, hosts a small exhibition relating to Scouting in its current form and a granite statue by Don Potter. The building committee, chaired by Sir Harold Gillett, Lord Mayor of London, purchased the site in 1956, and assigned Ralph Tubbs to design the house in the modern architectural style. The foundation stone was laid in 1959 by World Chief Guide Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, and it was opened in 1961 by Queen Elizabeth II. The largest part of the £400,000 cost was provided by the Scout Movement itself. Over the years, the house has been refurbished several times, so that it now provides modern and affordable lodging for Scouts, Guides, their families and the general public staying in London. The building also hosts conference and event space for hire.HistoryActing on a 1942 initiative by Chief Scout Lord Somers, a formal Baden-Powell House Committee was established by The Scout Association in 1953 under the direction of Sir Harold Gillett, later Lord Mayor of London. The committee's directive was to build a hostel to provide Scouts a place to stay at reasonable cost while visiting London. For this purpose, in 1956 the committee purchased a bombed-out property at the intersection of Cromwell Road and Queen's Gate at a cost of £39,000.

  • Place to pass mandatory if you scout! To take a photo with the statue of our founder and buy some distinctive, even if you are not staying in the hostel. Friendly staff and ability to use the services! Cute South Kensington district ... very French!

  • Attended a series of meetings here for a health and education charity and found both the facilities and the location ideal. Definitely a good choice as a meeting or conference venue. Close to Gloucester Road and Earl's Court tube stations as well as numerous bus routes.
  • Hotel it self is good as well, basic needs are filled. Beds are comfortable enough. Good trip! Fun history about the hotel, related to the founder of the Scouting groups around the world. Gift shop offers neck slides, patches, t-shirts. Outside is a statue of the lad, cool to see. Date of visit: November 2012
  • Located very conveniently! The hall is okay though.
  • For any Boy Scout, this is where it all started, and should be visited. Besides the obligatory picture with Lord Baden Powell out front, it was fascinating to realize that it's also a reading room, a hostile and the like a Scouting museum. If you're a patch collector, this is a must stop as well.
  • A very functional conference centre which can be adapted to a multitude of different events. The team are always on hand to help and plentiful facilities are available.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
