The second deepest lake in Scotland, Loch Ness is best known for alleged sightings of the mysterious Loch Ness Monster, affectionately called Nessie. This large freshwater lake extends for about 37 km (23 mi) southwest of Inverness, forming an important part of a series of interconnected and very murky bodies of water. The natural murkiness, created by the high peat content in the surrounding soil, contributes to the legend of Nessie and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Several operators offer boat tours around the lake, providing curious tourists with a chance to search for the famous monster. Don’t miss a visit to the nearby Loch Ness Center and Exhibition, examining the natural history and the myth of the lake’s elusive resident. Our Invermoriston itinerary builder makes visiting Loch Ness and other Invermoriston attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.
