  • National Trust Members. Brilliant day out. A small and compact site but plenty to look at. We enjoyed panning for gold. Alas, only fools gold to be found. But my little boy enjoyed it. Only a couple of picnic tables but there is also the tea rooms there. Nice visitor centre. Loads of information. There are 2 tours available. A Roman tour, how the Romans bull whipped their way to gold using slaves. Then the Victorian tour, how money and engineering was used to extract gold. Brilliant tour. Excellent your tour guide. Highly recommended and a great day out.
  • Despite wet weather the Dolaucothi gold mines offered a very enjoyable family day out for all ages. For non-NT members the £8 ticket price was excellent value as it included access to tours of both Roman and Victorian mines. We took the Victorian tour and were rewarded with a fascinating trip into the mines, guided by very friendly and knowledgeable staff. For the Roman mines we chose the self-guided tour which was equally enjoyable. Lunch in the tearoom was also excellent, with friendly and quick service as well as tasty food. Panning for gold proved particularly popular with the whole family, and we will surely be returning if we are staying nearby again.
  • An excellent example from the National Trust with really well guided tours and a well provisioned shop and cafe. Well worth a visit but make sure you get there early to avoid missing any tours.
  • We had such a wonderful day out (family of 4 with 2 boys aged 9 and 7) and it was very beautiful and informative. The boys were totally captivated for 4 hours even though we did not get to do everything. We went on the Victorian tour and we were guided by Catrina who was absolutely fabulous and then we went on the Roman tour and our tour guide was Emwr who was very knowledgeable and friendly. The tours were totally captivating. This visit was really good value for money. Our 2 boys are the sort that have to be at the front and ask lots of questions and all the guides were very patient and it really came accross that the guides were genuinely interested in the subject matter. Pay a visit and wear your walking boots.
  • Welsh gold has been mined since before Roman times, this National Trust open air museum shows all aspects of the mining process throughout the ages, with conducted walks through both the Roman and Victorian mines. Really enjoyed our day here, good day out for kids, recommend sturdy footwork.
