Garden Historic Site
Plas Newydd is a historic house in the town of Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales, and was the home of the Ladies of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, for nearly 50 years. Today, it is run as a museum by Denbighshire County Council.ArchitectureThe original cottage was expanded by the Ladies, and then again by subsequent owners in the 19th century. It is now returned to essentially the final structure left by the Ladies. Its most unusual feature is the profusion of pieces of reclaimed oak carvings collected by the Ladies and set in patchwork-style over much of the wall areas of the house. These came from broken-up furniture or church fittings and range in date from the medieval to the Baroque, but with folk and "Jacobean" vernacular styles of shallow carved decoration predominating, as well as Gothic-style black-and-white trim and carvings.HauntingsPlas Newydd is said to be haunted by former owners, the Ladies of Llangollen; Eleanor and Sarah and has been featured on UK's Most Haunted. Visitors have reported seeing the ladies apparitions in the library, their favorite room, among other rooms in the house, including their master bedroom. There have also been reports of people seeing and hearing footsteps of the spirit of an old woman walking around upstairs, and young boy seen in the drawing room, and in the state guest bedroom, as well as an old malevolent military man who lived here in the mid-1800s after the Ladies deaths.

  • Beautiful and fascinating house. The grounds are wonderful (and free too). Audio tour is quite useful and cheap at £1.50. Do try the paths through the wood and stream, glorious in spring with lots of wild garlic and flowers. Lovely. Take a deep breath if you are looking into the Ladies relationship. No mention of the "L" word here please - unless you want the separate commentary excluded from the main. Commentary firmly in denial and backward in its understanding. Hope someone reviews this soon. Sad. And for this alone I'm dropping it a star. Everything else about this place is 5! Was obligated to take the image below as the irony was too great. Sorry.
  • A little hidden gem. What a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon walking in the woodland walk and taking in some fantastic history.
  • Very interesting house, with gothic decoration, it worth to take the audio guide to ear about this place's History, no wheelchair access yo top floor as it's an old fashioned house. Really enjoyed the visit.
  • Beautiful gardens & a lovely little house
  • A little difficult to find (following a map we got from the Information Centre) but a great place to visit. Highly recommend. House and gardens are beautiful and great views of the Castell Dinas Brân ruins.
