Llyn Padarn, Llanberis

Llyn Padarn is a glacially formed lake in Snowdonia, Gwynedd, north Wales, and is an example of a moraine dammed lake. The lake is approximately 2mi long (about 240 acres) and at its deepest point is 94ft deep, and is one of the largest natural lakes in Wales. At its south-eastern end it is linked to the neighbouring Llyn Peris (which forms the lower reservoir of the Dinorwig power station). The busy village of Llanberis lies on the southern banks of the lake. The majority of Llyn Padarn is owned by Gwynedd Council and is part of Padarn Country Park. Whilst kayaking, rowing and sailing are permitted on the lake, powered craft require permission to use it. It reaches the sea at Caernarfon.Padarn Country Park is located on the northern flank of the lake, including Coed Allt Wen, a rare and ancient sessile oak woodland. Both the woodland and Llyn Padarn are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

  • Beautiful place to just kick back and chill near the lake or visit the FREE slate museum. Good little craft and gift shops but check out opening times of shops. Been visiting here for more years than I'd like to admit and it's just beautiful no matter what time of year we go.
  • Wonderful place in the Snowdonia national park. Amazing scenery. We went on the lakeside train to take in the views and visited the Lone Tree lakeside. Loads of families picnicking and Paddle boarding / kayakiing.
  • Great place for a nice walk or to take the children. Lots of amenities
  • Used to be nice peaceful place, now its gone more like Blackpool than a national park. The place is gridlocked all summer.
  • Lovely atmosphere and very clean water.
