Llyn Padarn is a glacially formed lake in Snowdonia, Gwynedd, north Wales, and is an example of a moraine dammed lake. The lake is approximately 2mi long (about 240 acres) and at its deepest point is 94ft deep, and is one of the largest natural lakes in Wales. At its south-eastern end it is linked to the neighbouring Llyn Peris (which forms the lower reservoir of the Dinorwig power station). The busy village of Llanberis lies on the southern banks of the lake. The majority of Llyn Padarn is owned by Gwynedd Council and is part of Padarn Country Park. Whilst kayaking, rowing and sailing are permitted on the lake, powered craft require permission to use it. Llyn Padarn Reviews
A stunning location with free parking available...in 2017?!! There is space for families to gather by the picnic benches, and a launch pontoon for SUP, or kayaks (or just to launch yourself into water... more »
Had a walk around the lakeside in the rain. Still a beautiful place even when you are soaking wet and cold more »
We walked alongside the lake while we were walking in Padarn Country Park. It is best accessed by foot, and is beautiful and calm (except when being swum in). It is also an SSSI because of a fish call... more »
Me and friends regularly come here kayaking. It's a really nice and relaxing place to kayak. You can swim in this lake, and it's apparently one of the cleanest in Europe. If I could live closer to this lake I certainly would as coming out here seems to help me de-stress.
Amazing views. You can have peaceful walks here. Great for photographers.
I spent a couple of days swimming at Llyn Padarn this September, and was hugely impressed by how well the lake and the surrounding country park are presented and taken care of. The lake itself is wonderfully clean and fresh, and the local management plainly take a lot of care to ensure a high standard of water quality. It's a brilliant location for outdoor activities, underneath Snowdon and right next to the small town of Llanberis. The lakeshore has been carefully sculpted and presented, with many sensibly-placed car parks, play areas and pathways near the town - then merging into more 'natural' bays and 'beaches' around the shallow lagoons. There's excellent access to the water for swimmers, canoeists and kayakers, plus a handy toilet block within sprinting distance. Plenty of picnic tables and secluded 'groves' among the trees make this a wonderful location for a relaxing afternoon if you just want to lay back and watch the wildlife. Alternatively, a paved cycleway provides a level footpath along the lakeshore if you want to take a longer walk - I walked the length of the lake and around to the steam railway, then back again in about two hours. Overall, the whole area was extremely clean. Plenty of other people around who were friendly and we exchanged greetings. Very little litter or dog mess. I'll definitely be back for a longer stay and to explore more of the area. Very impressed.
Lovely lake kids enjoyed the ducks and splashing
