Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre, Liverpool

4.1
Explore the elaborate labyrinthine system of tunnels hidden beneath the streets of Liverpool district at Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre. Philanthropist and businessman Joseph Williamson built them between 1810 and 1840, allegedly to provide income to the working-class laborers he employed--though this motive is subject to controversy. Construction of the tunnels ended following Williamson's death in 1840; they remained largely derelict and full of rubble but were eventually excavated in 1995 and turned into a heritage site. The tunnels range from 8 m (25 ft) wide and 6 m (20 ft) high to 1 m (4 ft) wide and 2 m (6 ft) high. You can take a guided tour of the underground network, where a selection of exhibits recounts the tales of Williamson's eccentric life. • I should have checked the other reviews before making a detour. I knew about the tunnel network and expected to see at least a portion of it. The reality is that - for your £4.50 ticket - all you get ...  more »

  • An old tunnel from the late 18th century with an amazing story behind. The owner, a rich person at his time, built it mainly to help people through employment. All rich people should see and learn from this place. Our guide to the tunnel was a passionate young lady who was definitely an asset for the site. By the way, the place itself is not a star yet. It is still being improved by volunteers.Gd job
  • Good quirky place. Bit smaller than I expected. The tunnels are huge but you only get to go round a fairly small section. Very interesting nonetheless and a fab example of British eccentricity!
  • Brilliant place!! Definitely would go again. I wish I lived closer because they're always looking for volunteers and the people who volunteer there were all so happy
  • Quirky, unique museum piece. The guide has his own informal style of delivery. Needs a little more infrastructure development to take off as a major tourist attraction.
  • Very interesting tour showing the unknown extent of the tunnels under Liverpool. Good charity shop as well. Nice that the artifacts discovered are on display as well.
