Western Approaches, Liverpool

Head underground to explore a site where World War II strategies were coordinated at Western Approaches. The war museum tells the story of the Battle of the Atlantic and details the importance of this bunker in winning the fight against German U-boats. A self-guided tour takes you around the subterranean complex, which has been restored to look as it did during the conflict. Photos and information displays distributed throughout provide additional context to the historical place. Please be aware that there are lots of stairs, and the attraction may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Liverpool holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Western Approaches and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

Very authentic museum, the history is still alive in this museum. Lots of stairs so if you have mobility problems probably not the museum for you.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit with my youngest son. Was a very quiet late Saturday afternoon and we pretty much had the run of the place. I wouldn't say it was more than an hour to get round it all - if you stopped and read every single thing - you could walk straight through in about 5 mins - which would be pointless. We stopped and took pictures, they had a display of various items you could pick up and look at, many various hats from different services and a Baby Gasmask outfit!
Very disappointed lady said it would take about on hour 2 walk around it took me and my 75 yr old dad about 15 mins not much 2 see.
Google reviews said it was open. Closed until 1st march 2016. You would think it would be open on a rainy winter saturday. What a wasted journey. I bet they never closed for winter in 1943!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous.
amazing control room very interesting real ww2 secret base
Having finished work early and gone into town to visit Western Approaches for the first time yesterday, I was very disappointed to be turned away at 3.25PM. The woman said that 3.30PM was the latest time for entry but would not allow entry at 3.25. Bizarrely, she said earlier there had been a loss of power for 5 minutes but it was back on now. On closing the door she said “Come earlier next time”. Very unfriendly and not a good experience.
