Chilford Hall, Linton

4.1
#10 of 90 in Wineries in England
Chilford Hall has been in the Alper family since 1966 when it was bought by the late Sam Alper, designer of the famous Sprite caravan and founder of the Little Chef chain of restaurants. Its development reflects his interest in Wine, Art and Sculpture: there is a profound sense of individuality and wherever you look there is something of beauty and interest for the visitor. The legacy of a lifetime spent collecting art, sculpture and architectural oddities.

  • We had an awesome 5 hours at Chilford Hall vineyard this Sunday. The visit was incredibly informative without ever boring us. The maximum group size they'll take is 40 but we were only 20 people - just the right size group as far as I'm concerned. Our guide was brilliant, full of humour and knowledge. He made time fly so quickly through lots of anecdotes and interesting facts about wine making. The tasting was really good and consisted of 4 wines: 3 whites and 1 sparkling rose. One minor downside: the lunch provided as part of the deal was canteen-like: chicken Kiev with boiled potatoes and green beans, no sauce. A very dry and "cheap" lunch. Black forest gateau for dessert, which looked and tasted mass-manufactured. A disappointing end to the perfect morning. Surely, a vineyard can offer better quality food for guests, which would better match the quality of the venue and products!
  • We had a lovely time. Jed took us on the tour of the vineyard and he was really knowledgeable. He gave the information in an interesting way. The wine tasting was also excellent with the opportunity to write tasting notes and Jed advising us what to look for. He was even able to demonstrate a corked wine! Which was also very interesting. The afternoon tea was also excellent fresh sandwiches, lovely cakes and scones, we didn't need anything else to eat all evening. Would definitely recommend Chilford Hall Vineyard for a visit. The cafe is open to everyone and the food seemed to be reasonably priced.
  • Vineyard and winery tour was very interesting. Followed by wine tasting which was good. Not sure about value for money as this was bought for us as a present. Would recommend for wine lovers.
  • Very interesting and informative with excellent guide. Recommended although lunch rather on the expensive side for what it is.
  • Great tour of the vineyard and wine tasting followed by afternoon tea. Highly recommended 🍷
