The Old Bishop's Palace is an historic visitor attraction in the city of Lincoln, Lincolnshire. When it was first built, in the late 12th century, it was at the centre of the vast Diocese of Lincoln, which stretched from the Humber to the Thames. The Palace was one of the most impressive buildings of medieval England, reflecting the power and wealth of Lincoln’s bishops. It is situated on a spectacular hillside site, just below Lincoln cathedral, providing extensive views over the city. The site lies immediately to the south of the Roman wall which had become the medieval defensive wall of the Bail, which enclosed both Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral. The palace was damaged during the Civil War and subsequently largely abandoned. During the period that followed the Bishop’s main residence was Buckden Palace in Huntingdonshire. In 1841, following the reduction in size of the Diocese of Lincoln, the Bishop moved to Riseholme, to the north of Lincoln. This proved inconvenient and Riseholme was sold. In 1886 an older building on the western side of the Palace enclosure was substantially rebuilt and enlarged in a Tudor revival style by the architect Ewan Christian. A further change occurred in 1888 when the architects Bodley and Garner rebuilt and converted the southern portion of the medieval Great Hall into a chapel for the Bishop.

  • Only a small part of the attraction was open during our visit, but there was a video explaining the whole site.  more »
  • It is worth quickly visiting the palace , it is close to the Cathedral , it is though slightly disappointing since only part of the palace is open  more »
  • Due to renovation work only part of this building was open which was disappointing. It was free and there was enough information about to keep you interested.  more »

  • The place is under restoration but what you can still access is lovely. There is a exhibit with video showing the history of the place which is extensive. The parts that are open right now are still worth a look and the entrance is free during the repairs. You can see a nice view of Lincoln if you walk up the the bishop’s private quarters.
  • Fantastic medieval palace ruins with a colourful royal history in the centre of Lincoln, next to the cathedral
  • I love Lincoln, one of the few city's in the UK that hasn't been swamped and ruined by diversity and quota's.
  • Ruined Bishop Palace. Interesting site to admire and explore. Right between Lincoln Cathedral and Usher's Art Gallery with a lovely Park surrounding. It's free to enter and explore with plaques dotted around with information on this "ruin". I was staying not too far from this site. Great place to bring the kids. I observed people with their dogs here but not sure if it's allowed. Great spot of this beautiful city of Lincoln.
  • In the middle of restoration but free access to some of the property. Interesting video and exhibition. Good views of the cathedral.
