Bolton Castle, Leyburn

4.1
#1 of 7 in Things to do in Leyburn
Surviving since the 14th century, Bolton Castle exists after withstanding attacks during the English Civil War. Enjoy a walk in the meticulously maintained herb garden and vineyard, or get lost in the hedge-maze. Learn about the importance of falcons by taking a tour with the expert falconer. Due to its popularity, book the "Hawk Walk" in advance. Make sure you bring your camera when you climb to the top of the castle. The stairs are steep, so take extra care with kids and the elderly. When you need a rest, visit the tearoom for a selection of food and drink. Use our Leyburn trip itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Bolton Castle and other attractions in Leyburn.

I first visited here well over 20 years ago and was really looking forward to a return trip which we finally managed on Sunday. I'd forgotten just how imposing the castle is as you drive up to it and ...  more »

Large ruin with a number of furnished rooms. Gives a nice image of Castle life in that time. Also one of the castles where Mary Queen of Scots has been caught. You may independently by the Castle walk but for a small additional charge, you can also get an audio tour. There is a demonstration in archery and a small bird of prey show. There is also a hive that you can enjoy watching and so the bees to work. At the parking lot are what wild boars, they are fed on a regular basis. When visiting the Castle you will not need to pay parking fees. If you have difficulty walking are is this a tricky attraction, many steps, thresholds and uneven stones (smooth at rain) There is a nice restaurant and a gift shop.

Steeped in history this castle was a good choice for our family, it has the history to suit me, the space for the kids to have a wonder about in the maze and garden with the bonus of a falconry displa...  more »

  • Excellent day out. The castle itself is superb, the tea room restaurant very good. We also enjoyed buying some plants with some good advice available and chatting with kestrel handler, Holly. Absolutely splendid location.
  • Very interesting, the castle was mostly complete as opposed to many "ruins" that claim to be castles. Staff were friendly and the food in the tea room was nice.
  • Good, but nothing outstanding. I'd not travel all the way from York(assuming that this castle shows up in places to visit nearby York) to just visit this castle. However if your nearby and have plenty of time, worth paying a visit.
  • Great views! Had a bite in the cafe and enjoyed exploring the amazing grounds.
  • Nice place to visit although a donation might help with the upkeep and also provide more visitor boards. I would be happy to pay Sorry it's not free, i went through the wrong door. Need to use the money raised for upkeep as it's shabby and the displays are crap
