Bolton Castle, Leyburn

4.2
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Leyburn
Surviving since the 14th century, Bolton Castle exists after withstanding attacks during the English Civil War. Enjoy a walk in the meticulously maintained herb garden and vineyard, or get lost in the hedge-maze. Learn about the importance of falcons by taking a tour with the expert falconer. Due to its popularity, book the "Hawk Walk" in advance. Make sure you bring your camera when you climb to the top of the castle. The stairs are steep, so take extra care with kids and the elderly. When you need a rest, visit the tearoom for a selection of food and drink. Use our Leyburn holiday builder to arrange your visit to Bolton Castle and other attractions in Leyburn.

  • Visited for first time, what a fantastic place. Stunning castle, scenery is amazing. Unfortunately too early in the season to watch any falconry displays and the gardens were a little empty, but that ...  more »

  • A beautiful castle stunning grounds. The only down fall was not enough information in some of the rooms as how it was like other castle we have visited. The other downside was the smell of the kitchen...  more »

  • Very nice castle to visit with children. Castle is partially used as it was in the past (kitchen, fire places etc). If possible, take the castle tour as there is a great explanation on how people lived in that era. Also bird-of-prey show was very nice.
  • The Bolton castle afternoon tea was amazing - for £9.95 the quality and quantity was unreal. Delicious sandwich, home made scone and cakes with tea. A welcome change to have quality food for a good price, at a tourist attraction. Beautiful setting and views. Will be back
  • While we were hiking the trails around Aysgarth Falls, we saw a sign that said the castle was closed today. We went there anyway and it was closed (the wedding party inside sounded like a load of fun). We decided to tour the gardens (super) and see the birds of prey as well as the beekeepers display. Have fun in the small garden maze and be sure to explore the gardens. The bee displays also included two ferrets in a cage that were desperately trying to get out. They were cute and almost out of water (poor buggers). The birds of prey were amazing to see and sad since they weren't free to fly. The cages were clean but very empty with little shelter against the weather. These could use some improvements immediately. We'll visit again and view the inside of the castle. The views of the surrounding countryside are amazing so don't forget to look up while touring the place!
  • Amazing place, very nice staff. Lovely tea room - soup of the day and cakes serves all day. Parking is free when you buy tickets to visit the castle. Archery, maze, bee house and birds of prey available - just check timetable.
  • Adults and children enjoyed the archery and falconry displays and participation. The building is a great combination of ruin and restored. You can see how the castle was used through to Tudor times and it helps our understanding of other castles that are entirely ruined. If you like castles this is a must see.
