Bolton Castle, Leyburn

(4.1/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Surviving since the 14th century, Bolton Castle exists after withstanding attacks during the English Civil War. Enjoy a walk in the meticulously maintained herb garden and vineyard, or get lost in the hedge-maze. Learn about the importance of falcons by taking a tour with the expert falconer. Due to its popularity, book the "Hawk Walk" in advance. Make sure you bring your camera when you climb to the top of the castle. The stairs are steep, so take extra care with kids and the elderly. When you need a rest, visit the tearoom for a selection of food and drink. Use our Leyburn trip itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Bolton Castle and other attractions in Leyburn.

  • This was such a good find. It doesn't make a great fuss of itself in its publicity but it's such an amazing place. It's a castle in the raw. It's not been tidied up for tourists. You could imagine tha...  more »

  • Nice place and free to visit although a donation might help with the upkeep and also provide more visitor boards. I would be happy to pay Sorry it's not free, i went through the wrong door. Need to use the money raised for upkeep as it's shabby and the displays are crap
  • Bolton Castle is nice with friendly service and assistance, historical and very interesting; worth a visit
  • Really interesting. Kept as it was. Kids really enjoyed going round
  • Even an old cynical Lancastrian like me has to admit that this whole area, for miles around, is "God's own country". Like so many parts of North Yorkshire this is a wonderful place to visit, especially if you are on a motorcycle.
  • We got married at Bolton Castle and it was the absolute best day of our lives. Stunningly beautiful scenery, decorations, fairy lights and candle light made the Castle magical, perfect. Tom, Guy, Lorna and all the staff were outstandingly brilliant, the food was 5 star, all came out hot, at the same time. We went the following day to clear up and everything had been packed away for us!! They went above and beyond and we can't thank them enough. THANK YOU TEAM BOLTON CASTLE!!! Tom and Laura
