Bolton Castle, Leyburn

4.1
#1 of 11 in Things to do in Leyburn
Surviving since the 14th century, Bolton Castle exists after withstanding attacks during the English Civil War. Enjoy a walk in the meticulously maintained herb garden and vineyard, or get lost in the hedge-maze. Learn about the importance of falcons by taking a tour with the expert falconer. Due to its popularity, book the "Hawk Walk" in advance. Make sure you bring your camera when you climb to the top of the castle. The stairs are steep, so take extra care with kids and the elderly. When you need a rest, visit the tearoom for a selection of food and drink. Use our Leyburn holiday builder to arrange your visit to Bolton Castle and other attractions in Leyburn.

  • May 2018: After a longish ramble and quite a steep climb, we came to Bolton Castle. It stands imposingly on a hill and can be seen for miles around. You pay to tour the interior and the Castle walls - the views are tremendous. It also has a good little teashop. There is ample parking that costs Β£3 for all-day parking. If you visit the Castle, however, the parking ticket price is refunded. There are also free toilets. Absolutely worth a visit if in the area.
  • A stunning castle with beautiful views and so many things to explore. The history behind the castle is interesting and it is surprising how intact the structure us. The staff are great and there is so much to see and do. Especially enjoyed the falconer exhibit with the birds of prey.
  • Amazing medieval castle, very well preserved and in the beautiful valley of Wensleydale. After admission you have access to the whole castle, including the upper walled areas with great views of the surrounding landscape. The castle also includes a bird of prey centre with daily displays included in the price. Definitely one of my favourite places πŸ˜ŠπŸ°πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
  • Great castle, great grounds be aware currently Β£3 parking charge which is knocked off your admission when you enter so take change with you. The castle and grounds are beautiful makes you wonder how they coped in such a big place without central heating in the winter. The cafe serves nice food, however the cafe seems to be undecided on it's identity, the decor is typical tea room, plastic table cloth uncomfortable seats but the food is trying to be upmarket, 5 chips served on a slate plate served 45mins after ordering at bordering on restaurant prices. The cafe is freezing early spring (you can see your breath) and food served on a slate goes stone cold before you have eaten it. Personally I won't be using the cafe again if I go.
  • Confusing layout needs a better map to find your way around. Would like more info in the rooms too. You could easily miss a room or in fact a whole section. Disappointed that no wild boar on sale in the shop, nor a sign to say where it could be bought nor what local restaurants are supplied. Missing a trick there. Interesting though. Huge castle much bigger than Midlam (?) That we were at a couple of days earlier in the same area.
