(4.8/5 based on 550 reviews on the web)
Shetland Museum and Archives is a highlight if you are looking to explore Shetland's rich heritage and culture. Enjoy the collection of artifacts, images, and audio recordings, spanning the last 6,000 years from Shetland's geological beginnings through the oil boom of the 1970s. Other things belonged to Shetlanders, or to emigrants from the islands who lived elsewhere, while many objects are unique to Shetland. The gift shop is particularly popular. While you shop, you can peruse handmade Shetland crafts, jewelry, and a vast collection of Shetland literature on all subjects from Picts and Vikings to ponies and folklore. The site sometimes offers special events, such as workshops. Make Shetland Museum and Archives a part of your Lerwick vacation plans using our Lerwick travel itinerary maker.

  • A very good place to visit to learn about Shetland and their history, I really like this museum, as they are very thoughtful, they have some interactive feature which help visitor understood more about their history. Must visit.
  • Fantastic museum, great exhibits and nice restaurant
  • Really excellent museum telling the history of the islands in a vivid manner and putting everything into context. The restaurant is also really very good. Well worth a visit.
  • Friendly, knowledgeable staff and outstandingly well-laid out and displayed artefacts, telling the geological and archeological history of Shetland. I learned so much! Lunch at the Hays Dock restaurant was excellent, too, with an unbeatable view out over the water to Bressay.
  • Small but packed and we'll done. And free. :)
