Shetland Museum and Archives, Lerwick

#1 of 20 in Things to do in Lerwick
Shetland Museum and Archives is a highlight if you are looking to explore Shetland's rich heritage and culture. Enjoy the collection of artifacts, images, and audio recordings, spanning the last 6,000 years from Shetland's geological beginnings through the oil boom of the 1970s. Other things belonged to Shetlanders, or to emigrants from the islands who lived elsewhere, while many objects are unique to Shetland. The gift shop is particularly popular. While you shop, you can peruse handmade Shetland crafts, jewelry, and a vast collection of Shetland literature on all subjects from Picts and Vikings to ponies and folklore. The site sometimes offers special events, such as workshops. Make Shetland Museum and Archives a part of your Lerwick vacation plans using our Lerwick travel itinerary maker.

You can easily seen several hours in this well curated regional museum. Its very modern and describes the history of the Shetland Islands, geology, people and culture. There is a lot to take in.  more »

  • This free museum charts various aspects of Shetland in an easy to navigate and informative way. I wish we had visited when we arrived rather than the day we left! If we had, we would have better been able to put things into context. That said, it has stood us in good stead for our next visit.
  • Fantastic exhibits and history of Shetlands from geology to people, to present day. Well worth the stop.
  • We normally don't go to a lot of museums when we travel, but decided to visit the Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick and were completely blown away. First of all, this is exactly the kind of museum we do enjoy - with lot of artifacts on display, but not enough to make it feel stuffy. Moreover, and more importantly, the amount of text/information given about each display is appropriate and just the right amount to make you feel that you learned something without having to become an expert on the subject. There's some interactive exhibits as well for those who enjoy that. Secondly, it's FREE! What?!? Ok, sometimes even free things actually end up costing you more than money (=your precious time) but we so enjoyed this visit that we actually ended up making a small donation at the door. Everything else would have felt wrong and we highly recommend any visitor to Lerwick to go visit, even if you're normally not a museum fan.
  • Only managed a quick visit before sailing, but from what I saw an excellent museum.
  • Well laid out, interesting and family friendly too.
