Tourist Spot Arena / Stadium
Welford Road is a rugby union stadium in Leicester, England, and is the home ground for Leicester Tigers. It is located between Aylestone Road and Welford Road on the edge of the city centre. The stadium has a capacity of 26,000, making it the largest purpose-built club rugby union ground in England; the capacity is planned to eventually reach 30,000. It hosted five full England national team matches between 1902 and 1923, and staged a single match at each of the 1991 and 1999 Rugby World Cups.HistoryThe Leicester Tigers moved there in 1892 and the first stands accommodated 1,100 spectators. The club house is located on Aylestone Road, where a small temporary stand is erected, with the other sides having permanent stands built on them. The Crumbie Stand was built in the 1920s with the terrace being added later. The stand is named after the club's secretary who built the stand, Tom Crumbie. The members' stand – now replaced by the Caterpillar stand – was built on the side of the ground adjoining the former Granby Halls site; this stand was also built in the twenties. This expansion almost bankrupted the club but it helped attract top players and laid the foundations for Leicester first glory years in the 1920s and 1930s as well as their subsequent success. The stand is now sponsored by Holland and Barratt and is also commonly known by the same name. The stand allows for standing and seating capacity at the stadium.

  • Great stadium to visit, easy access and facilities for beer and snacks all around. Good pubs within close walking distance too. Combine that with a 100% winning record there for my side (@glasgowWarriors, 0-47!!!!) what's not to love???
  • Wonderful stadium, atmosphere is always great and as away fans are not segregated you can get some brillant banter too! Large bars under the stands with snack stands and domino's stands aswell! And the added bonus of your allowed to drink in the stands!
  • For business use, the boxes provided were spacious and well kept. The staff are always friendly and will go out of their way to be helpful. A fantastic venue.
  • This stadium offers an amazing atmosphere when a game is on. Since moving to Leicester I have enjoyed ever trip to the stadium to see the Tigers play. I love the pint cup idea, and the staff are amazing, friendly and approachable.
  • Bar staff are pretty awful. Often mess orders up or ask for more/less money than is correct. Apart from that it's a great stadium with a fantastic atmosphere most games.

Where to stay in Leicester

A B&B near Leicester Clock Tower is within walking distance of the main attractions. Charming architecture surrounds the clock tower square and makes a lovely backdrop to walking tours of the city. For a luxury hotel, consider staying in a renovated Victorian building on the outskirts of the city center.
