The New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is a museum on New Walk in Leicester, England, not far from the city centre. The original building was designed by Joseph Hansom, designer of the hansom cab. Two dinosaur skeletons are permanently installed in the museum — a cetiosaur found in Rutland (affectionately named George), and a plesiosaur from Barrow upon Soar. Other permanent exhibits include an Egyptian area, minerals of Leicestershire, the first Charnia fossil identified nearby, and a wildspace area featuring stuffed animals from around the world. The museum opened in 1849 as one of the first public museums established within the United KingdomIn September 2011, the New Walk Museum expanded its Dinosaur Gallery, reorganizing fossils, adding a new room, and modifying the gallery itself. The opening of the new Dinosaur Gallery was launched by David Attenborough. The "star attractions" of the new gallery include the aforementioned Rutland cetiosaur, Charnia and plesiosaur fossils, as well as a Leedsichthys fossil and a piece of the Barwell Meteorite. The new gallery predominantly features on extinct marine reptiles.

  • In an attractive location, with cheap parking, this museum is free, with a reasonably priced cafe. The Egyptian section may be small but it has three or four mummies on display - which is to say, both...  more »
  • Popped in here with a couple of hours to spare. An interesting little museum. It was a shame that due to works we could not get to all the exhibits, but the dinosaurs were enjoyable.  more »

  • Go fairly often with kids to see new exhibits and revisit the older permanent ones. Wheelchair access is available and even lifts for those in need of assistance. Cafe little expensive for what you get. Small souvenir shop. Some interesting exhibits including dinosaurs, geology and rocks. Ancient Egypt, various art displays and often runs free / low cost activities for kids during school holidays. Donations are accepted.
  • A wonderful museum with so much to offer. No matter what your interests you will find something to admire in this grand building. From a diverse natural history collection to the incredible German Expressionist art collection you will be inspired and intrigued. A combination of permanent exhibitions (Egyptian, dinosaurs, modern and historical art) and a wide ranging temporary exhibition programme make this museum one of my favourite places to visit. Great for individuals, families, experts and laymen, the staff are always welcoming and knowledgeable - and it's FREE! As you can tell I'm a bit a fan...
  • Visited here after my son went on a school trip and had to make a leaflet recommending a visit - it worked as four of us went and more joining us next time! I've lived in Leicestershire for over 20 years and this was my first visit but it certainly won't be my last. Fantastic and free! Wonderful displays to occupy guests of all ages. Interactive for the young and inquisitive and texts with additional information for those wanting to learn even more. Knowledgeable Museum Guides on hand to help throughout. The Egyptian area was my favourite, whilst my dad liked the dinosaur area, mum the paintings and my son just loves it all. The upstairs was closed off on our visit but still plenty to do, lots of places to sit down and rest and good access for those with limited mobility. We spent 3.5hours here, had a lovely snack in the café and discussed our return! If you haven't visited please give it a go - you won't be disappointed.
  • Free admission. There are some interesting exhibits featured here for many subjects. It's a good place to visit if you're in Leicester with children. There's also a cafe here for lunch.
  • Brilliant place to spend a wet afternoon, something for everyone. Grandkids loved wandering round the dinosaurs and exploring the Egypt displays, and dashing round the wildlife section where they could disappear in tunnels etc. Small play area for toddlers, plus an excellent cafe area for drinks and snacks
