The New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is a museum on New Walk in Leicester, England, not far from the city centre. It opened in 1849 as one of the first public museums in the United Kingdom. New Walk contains displays of both science and art, international and local. The original building was designed by Joseph Hansom, designer of the hansom cab. It has been expanded several times, most recently in 2011.Major exhibitsPermanent exhibits include dinosaurs, an Egyptian area, minerals of Leicestershire, the first Charnia fossil identified nearby, and a wildspace area featuring stuffed animals from around the world.Dinosaurs and fossilsNew Walk Museum has a significant collection of extinct lifeforms. Two dinosaur skeletons are permanently on display — a cetiosaur found in Rutland, and a plesiosaur from Barrow upon Soar. The Rutland Dinosaur, affectionately nicknamed George, is a specimen of Cetiosaurus oxoniensis. The fifteen-meter dinosaur, which is among the most complete sauropod skeletons in the world, was discovered in June 1968, in the Williamson Cliffe quarry near Little Casterton and Great Casterton. The skeletal remains have been in the museum since 1975; the majority of the bones in the display are replicas of the originals, which are too fragile to be used. The Rutland Dinosaur featured on an episode of Blue Peter, and was opened by Blue Peter's Janet Ellis in 1985.

  • We had a fantastic time looking around at all the exhibits really interesting and good fun. The Little one loved looking at everything. Coffee shop and toilets available with lovely grounds to sit and enjoy a summers day. Little gift shop to get a little gift or if bigger budget a piece of amazing stone crystal. Highly recommend to all.
  • Great place to spend a little time. The new stair case is beautiful. All the interactive activities where great fun for my friends 1yr old grandson. Parking is great for blue badge holders right outside museum. There is a lift and access is good to all areas. Have a coffee and buy a few gifts and the visit is worth while.
  • An iconic building housing antiquities that are a must see. Focus is primarily on art but does include so much more. The building feels like and looks like it belongs in the imperial empire times with its large pillars on the front elevation. Inside is a cool atmosphere that really does give the look and feel of times past.
  • Blew me away with the quality of what they have. Some of it is incredibly old. A dinosaur fossil exhibit is literally hundreds of millions of years old, for example. Egyptian exhibit was detailed and engaging. The animals exhibit was really cool also. The paintings gallery contained some beautiful works of art as well. Recommended very highly! Consider also spending the afternoon at victoria park in the sun afterwards also.
  • Free museum within easy walk of city centre. Varied interesting exhibits, maybe not so great for young children as only a few interactive things, but facinating dinosaur exhibit. Good art collection with relevant local links. Decent cafe and toilet facilities. Wheelchair accessible throughout.
