Leeds Kirkgate Market is a market in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England located on Vicar Lane. It is the largest covered market in Europe. There are currently 800 stalls which attract over 100,000 visitors a weekLocationThe markets are situated with their front facing onto Vicar Lane and the southern face onto Kirkgate. To the east is Leeds City bus station, while to the north is an open car park, which will become part of the Eastgate Quarters, should that development take place. To the south of the open market is the markets multi-storey car park operated by National Car Parks (NCP). From across Vicar Lane, the markets are connected to Briggate via the Victoria Quarter.AccessLocal and regional buses heading out of the city centre, as well as long-distance National Express coaches, stop at Leeds City bus station, to the rear of the complex. First Leeds buses stop at various points on the bus-box of which Vicar Lane is a part. The Vicar Lane and Markets car park are situated close-by. The formerly proposed Leeds Supertram and Leeds Trolleybus schemes included a stop to serve both the markets and the bus station, however neither scheme succeeded in securing central government funding.

  • The history of this building is forgotten. Visit this market for fruit and veg. There's an outdoor market round the back. Lots of other shops and variety is cropping in now there are a few 'world food' shops in there now. Not good for parking - no free parking in Leeds anymore. You may be lucky enough to find a car park local. Victoria gate not too far away. I take the bus. Make sure you look at the architecture as this is one of the oldest standing buildings in Leeds city centre.
  • Wonderful market in old building. Really charming stalls with different zones for different types of produce. A proper market where you can still go and do your shopping, not overpriced farmers market or such. Great spacious area with street food, though could fit in some more options in this area. Great fish stalls and butchers. Can find a bit of everything there and feels really authentic with lots of locals. Definitely worth spending half an hour exploring it and grabbing some food. Well worth a visit.
  • To be honest the market is no way as great a shopping experience that it used to be. Modernisation and lack of interest from prospective new businesses has all but killed the atmosphere that used to keep the market alive and buzzing with excited customers from all over the north of England. The few existing stall holder's that remain do there best to recreate the ambience but to no avail as the markets heyday has long passed. I say this not just as a customer but as someone that worked in the market for many years back in the 1970s. But still worth a visit to see the old Victorian architecture if nothing else and maybe you will be lucky and pickup a couple of bargains along the way.
  • A wide range of shops and places to eat. Great to pick up your fruit and veg, meat and fish and even your bread. The independent foot stalls/stands offer cuisines from all over the world at great prices.
  • Great variety of food available. Not the fault of the market per-se, but I wish more stalls took card. There's always a queue outside the cash machine. With the lunch hour dwindling down, it's hard to ignore the Co-Op literally 30 seconds away. Maybe a service the market could provide the occupants?
