Castle
At Lancaster Castle, learn about the long and gruesome role this castle played in English history. On the tour of this 11th century medieval castle and its still in-use courtroom, gain insight into the Pendle Witch Trials as well as the ways in which prisoners were executed and deported. Explore the modern prison block, in use up until 2011, and the castle’s old dungeon cells. Inside Hadrian’s Tower, ponder the display of shackles, manacles and neck irons once used to restrain prisoners. After the tour, take in views of the city and the River Lune from the castle’s commanding hilltop position, or if you prefer, relax in the café, located in the former prison’s waiting room. • Was a fantastic experience Louise our tour guide was amazing she had so much knowledge to share that 1hr 30min tour was over in a flash. Loved it the attention to detail was first class. Only down side was parking. We managed to park on the street near the railway station which had a 3hr return time which was just enough after enjoying soup and a sandwich in the cafe yum yum.
  • Great old castle with loads of interesting history. The guided tour is good, especially if you like to be locked in a pitch black dungeon. The castle has a lot of scaffolding up at the moment due to converting it back from being a real prison, but there's still plenty to see.
  • Beautiful building, great to have a quick tour around the inside with its classical interior. Excellent grounds too, with spectacular views to the west.
  • Lovely tour around the old castle and prison with our tour guide Chris. The tour lasted approximately 90mins. We had the chance to see inside the working court rooms, visit the A wing of the prison and spend some time in the medieval prison cell. Chris was very knowledgeable and I would recommend taking the tour to anyone.
