Lancaster Castle, Lancaster

At Lancaster Castle, learn about the long and gruesome role this castle played in English history. On the tour of this 11th century medieval castle and its still in-use courtroom, gain insight into the Pendle Witch Trials as well as the ways in which prisoners were executed and deported. Explore the modern prison block, in use up until 2011, and the castle’s old dungeon cells. Inside Hadrian’s Tower, ponder the display of shackles, manacles and neck irons once used to restrain prisoners. After the tour, take in views of the city and the River Lune from the castle’s commanding hilltop position, or if you prefer, relax in the café, located in the former prison’s waiting room. • Did this tour with 2 grumpy teenagers, 1 of whom remained grumpy whilst the other was really engaged thanks to the excellent tour guide we were with. Its had a very varied history and is still in use today in parts. The guides do an excellent job in bringing that to life and entertaining the wide range of people they take on the tour. Its not the slickest tourist attraction you'll visit in terms of the surroundings, but the guides are very knowledgeable and in the hour long tour you learn a lot about its most distant and also most recent history in a fun and light way. Small shop and a cafe (that was closed for refurbishment march / April)
  • If you are in Lancaster for a day, definitely visit the castle, takes about 1-1.5 hrs . £8 for adult ticket with guided tour - found out about the gory and interesting story of the castle and the city itself. Lovely castle/ex-prison! Recommend it. And there is Lancaster priory church less than 5 minutes behind the castle which I visited to kill time while I waited for tour to start.
  • The guided tour was very interesting and well worth the money. I wasn't too sure my kids would like it, but they did and were impressed because they'd been learning Medieval history at school. A little disappointed that we didn't get to see the prison blocks and I would give more stars if these areas were included in future tours.
  • Could have been better, limited access i guess? Was only shown a small part of the whole place, things were mentioned but, not actually shown. No look at the actual grounds/ex prison itself, only the cells in the gift shop area. The £8 per adult tour was not really that great, an hour to see only 5 rooms. Photography is limited as still a working court, but you can take in some areas.
  • The castle is so beautiful. The prison there is must to see. The Guide Graham is so knowledgeable about the history of the place. We managed to take good photos. We highly recommend to visit the castle and the church next to it.
