Skiddaw, Lake District

4.7
Skiddaw is a mountain in the Lake District National Park in England. Its 931m summit is the sixth-highest in England. It lies just north of the town of Keswick, Cumbria, and dominates the skyline in this part of the northern lakes. It is the simplest of the Lake District mountains of this height to ascend (as there is a well-trodden tourist track from a car park to the north-east of Keswick, near the summit of Latrigg) and, as such, many walking guides recommend it to the occasional walker wishing to climb a mountain. This is the first summit of the fell running challenge known as the Bob Graham Round when undertaken in a clockwise direction.
The mountain lends its name to the surrounding areas of ‘Skiddaw Forest’, and ‘Back o' Skidda' ’ and to the isolated ‘Skiddaw House’, situated to the east, formerly a shooting lodge and subsequently a youth hostel. It also provides the name for the slate derived from that region: Skiddaw slate. Tuned percussion musical instruments or lithophones exist which are made from the slate, such as the Musical Stones of Skiddaw held at the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.

  • 6th highest mountain in England. Quite strenous hike, some hiking experience required. Great views over Keswick from the top.  more »
  • Quite a strenuous hike, we did the whole path including little man but you can skip this and use a flatter path to skirt round to the summit. Very good path but steep!! Amazing views over Derwentwater...  more »
  • Tackled skiddaw via little man, the weather was dry, breezy and sunny, but on the peak the wind was horrific driving rain. Luckily the shelter was free and hunkered down for a bite to eat. The views a...  more »

  • Great English mountain! A challenge to ascend but doable, with a well trodden and accessible track up to the top.
  • Nice easy peak to climb. Good paths. Only didnt have the weather. About 1.5 to Reach the summit from underskiddaw car park
  • Not for the faint hearted. This is the 4th highest mountain in the lake district. It's often covered with clouds, unless you get it on a good day, so make sure you're prepared.
  • Great mountain for fell running. Starting at Moot hall and heading up Skiddaw is the first part of the Bob Graham round. If it is your first time heading up make sure you take a map as there are a few turnings which may cause you to go off course.
  • We came up from Keswick along what is probably the most popular route. The hardest part of the climb is about 10 mins after you go through the Underskiddaw car park, it's pretty steep and scree-y, wouldn't be fun in the rain (especially if you come back this way). Little Man peak is only around half an hour from the peak of Skiddaw and is worth the walk up if you are already up there. Unfortunately the views up Skiddaw were obscures for us because of low clouds, but nevertheless it was a good walk with great views over Keswick and Derwentwater.
