Skiddaw, Lake District

4.7
Skiddaw is a mountain in the Lake District National Park in England. Its 931m summit is the sixth-highest in England. It lies just north of the town of Keswick, Cumbria, and dominates the skyline in this part of the northern lakes. It is the simplest of the Lake District mountains of this height to ascend (as there is a well-trodden tourist track from a car park to the north-east of Keswick, near the summit of Latrigg) and, as such, many walking guides recommend it to the occasional walker wishing to climb a mountain. This is the first summit of the fell running challenge known as the Bob Graham Round when undertaken in a clockwise direction. The mountain lends its name to the surrounding areas of ‘Skiddaw Forest’, and ‘Back o' Skidda' ’ and to the isolated ‘Skiddaw House’, situated to the east, formerly a shooting lodge and subsequently a youth hostel. It also provides the name for the slate derived from that region: Skiddaw slate. Tuned percussion musical instruments or lithophones exist which are made from the slate, such as the Musical Stones of Skiddaw held at the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.

  • Staying at Applethwaite and drove up to Skiddaw. Due to the snow, we could not get through, so parked at the side of the road and walked to the top. Very peaceful with great views. Highly recommended.  more »

  • Hard climb but with superb views so well worth it. Skiddaw has an easy path to follow and I did this one on my own, finding it simple to navigate and because it was a clear, dry day there were almost no tricky, boggy bits. The beginning is steep and hard on the glutes - be prepared for lots of stops, pauses for rest etc if you're not a super-fit climber. I the whole thing took me 7 hours, although I started at Keswick and not Latrigg car park. I consider myself to be a quite slow hiker (pretty much everyone overtook me) so if you're looking for an indication of time, mine might be your worst case scenario!! All in all, a phenomenal day.
  • Awesome. Good walk, technical in places. No shortage of friendly people in places such as this. Get above the cloud line when there's snow on the ground and you feel like an explorer.
  • My favourite mountain, there are 4 or 5 different routes up but the walk up via the Ullock Pike ridge is probably the best with stunning views to Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater. The tourist route from Keswick is probable the gentlest way up. There are many parking options along the A591 and at Dodd wood where there is a cafe and toilets.
  • Having done this a couple of times, it didn't seem any easier the second time. We walked from the centre of Keswick, but you can make the walk considerably shorter by driving up to the UnderSkiddaw parking area. The road is very lumpy, so watch out for your springs. On clear days there are some amazing views from the trig point. We found that once you've got up the initial very steep section, it is a reasonable walk. Mind the weather as it was much colder on the slopes. A compass and a map is a good idea for this walk.
  • Very nice hike..stunning views during the climb to and at the summit. Very cold and windy up there and it's November. Despite road closures nearby causing a 40 minute diversion (shakes fist) I parked at the café doing this one. Up and down in 3 hours.
