Mother Shipton's Cave, Knaresborough

3.3
#1 of 6 in Parks in Knaresborough
Centered around the legend of a prophetess from the middle ages, Mother Shipton's Cave holds the only petrifying well of its kind in England. First opened in 1630 as a tourist attraction, the well allows you to witness everyday objects be turned to stone. Wander down the 1.6 km (1 mi) long woodland trail to see both the cave and the well while learning the tale of old Mother Shipton. The walk ends at a small museum and gift shop that sells petrified souvenirs. Be sure to make a wish at the well before leaving; they are rumored to always come true. With our international travel planner, Knaresborough attractions like Mother Shipton's Cave can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Such an amazing place, great history and magic that surrounds the royal forest of Knaresborough. The staff are absolutely fantastic, friendly and accommodating. The theatrical entertainment put on during school holidays is outstanding, the actors are superb. There is one actor that goes full into character (he’s been Queenie, professor Bob,, an archer from Robin Hood to name a few) Great trails and hunts for clues/answers. Good adventure park, brilliant price for a family day out, as you can go in and out all day. Although no food outlets (although once there was a pizza oven used) there are lots of places for picnics. Or outside the park there are plenty of pubs, cafes and the town centre is a short hilly walk away.
  • Over with all too quickly. As a party of 4 adults we were done well within the hour. The staff were pleasant and friendly enough, but the price was outrageous. The walk was nice , but the cost really did leave a bitter taste. I won't be back. I feel 3 quid is closer to mark for what you get out of it.
  • We visited at the weekend as somewhere different to go with kids and meet friends who live across the region. I had looked at reviews beforehand and seen it was a mixed bag, with value often cited as an issue and I can understand why. Firstly the positives, it's a unique attraction and set in a beautiful location. The kids play area was good and looked quite new. The summer hols wizards and witches trail was a nice feature that gave the kids something to hunt on the list and few of them were staff led, including potion making, broom stick training and magic house sorting. The kids really enjoyed the experience and the staff were great. Really entertaining and very much in the spirit of it. So all in all we had a good time and the extra event put on for the school hols made it worthwhile for us, but I would not rush back, especially for a regular day as there just is not enough on offer to provide value for money when compared to other attractions. It cost us £38 for a couple hours in the afternoon. Price aside, it's a nice experience taking a stroll through woods by a flowing river, the views are lovely and you can picnic at various places, including by a fast flowing weir. There are different things to do, such as the coin tree where you can add a coin to a fallen tree trunk with the hammers making it look like metal scales.
  • Nice woodland walk but pricey for what's there. Staff all very friendly and enthusiastic. Museum small and a little dated, more a shop with a couple of cabinets. Don't expect a huge cave because it's tiny (more of an opening if anything). Will happily change to five stars if my wishing well wish comes true.
  • They've made a big deal out of not much! Nice setting on the Riverside and a decent playground, but the cave is frankly not worth it. Save your money, go for a nice walk down a free section of Riverside and take the kids to the park.
