  • The Palace/Castle nothing remains, standing just a few load-bearing walls that give an idea of the grandeur of the building but don't have a real artistic value. Admission fee, ticket in common with more interesting earl's palace.

  • This small ruin is across from the earl's palace and though much smaller, has more character. Not a lot to see and you can do it in about 30 minutes and feel complete. If you are in Kirkwall, you need...  more »
  • Thoroughly enjoyed visiting these Historic Scotland sites. Able to get in, explore, climb etc. Friendly helpful service in the shop.

  • The Earl's Palace dates back to the 1600's, built on/around the Bishop's Palace from the 1100's. Very interesting glimpse into how they lived in these 2 different periods. There's an entry fee (for the Earl's and Bishop's Palace together), but it's included in the Orkney Explorer pass (worth taking if you plan to visit at least 2-3 sites during your stay -- which you should!).
  • If you are into history an interesting place
  • This is a lovely ruin, there are many rooms to explore and the grounds are lovely. The price is a little high.
  • Really interesting a bit pricey
