  • This is a great place to visit. It's just a short walk up from the car park, and after visiting the cairn, you can climb a little higher still for great views. There are no organised tours from the cr...  more »
  • its a hike up a short hill & you have to get in on hands & knees, but its a hidden gem of a cairn - there are free torches in a box next to the style. the view from here on a good day is spectacular. ...  more »
  • Normally, nothing is going on the Orkneys. Nevertheless, it happens that before other attractions in prehistoric times a bus found a. Then it becomes full, tight and uncomfortable. All this won't happen rather one of Cuween Hill chambered Cairn. Below on the road (Kirkwall - Stromness), there is a small parking for 4-5 cars. First it goes up a steep gravel path 10 minutes on foot. At the end of the road, one finds that there are here again 2 parking bays – so you can take the car. Then goes up the mountain a steep path on foot once approx. 15 min. The inconspicuous Cairn is just below the Summit. From the road you can see but have nothing to do with the Cairn actually only the stone pillars on the Summit, which are however quite new and also deserve a visit. The Cairn is surrounded by a barbed wire, you can exceed on a head of cattle. In a small box, you will find a representative selection of flashlights, all of that work. So armed, you can crawl through a narrow entrance tunnel into the Interior. Arrived, you can stand and admire the simple interior design in the burial chamber. Wonderful feeling of discovery! Don't forget to tuck the torch then again properly in the box!

  • The little brother of Maeshowe. Far less crowded, and far less fake. By fake I mean there is no special lighting, no guided tours, no handicap access. this is the real thing, almost like discovering a chambered Cairn on your own. It is a very scenic walk half-way up Cuween Hill. Flashlights in the visitor box are mostly dead, so bring your own light source. Don't try it if you are claustrophobic.
  • A beautiful example af a chambered cairn in perfect condition. You have to be agile to look inside; the entrance is about two feet/60 centimeters high. A flashlight is nessecary and available in a box outside.
  • Its so much more than you expect. Didnt think it would be open to enter as its unmanned. But you can 😄
  • History at it's best. Wonder at the skill of the builders from thousands of years ago as you enter the cairn and feel the atmosphere of days long gone.
  • Really nice cairn. Entrance is through a short front entrance chamber (similar to Maeshowe) - short people can duck walk and don't necessarily have to crawl on hands and knees. Nice, short walk up the hill with great views out over the entire area.
