This is a great place to visit. It's just a short walk up from the car park, and after visiting the cairn, you can climb a little higher still for great views. There are no organised tours from the cr...  more »

Normally, nothing is going on the Orkneys. Nevertheless, it happens that before other attractions in prehistoric times a bus found a. Then it becomes full, tight and uncomfortable. All this won't happen rather one of Cuween Hill chambered Cairn. Below on the road (Kirkwall - Stromness), there is a small parking for 4-5 cars. First it goes up a steep gravel path 10 minutes on foot. At the end of the road, one finds that there are here again 2 parking bays – so you can take the car. Then goes up the mountain a steep path on foot once approx. 15 min. The inconspicuous Cairn is just below the Summit. From the road you can see but have nothing to do with the Cairn actually only the stone pillars on the Summit, which are however quite new and also deserve a visit. The Cairn is surrounded by a barbed wire, you can exceed on a head of cattle. In a small box, you will find a representative selection of flashlights, all of that work. So armed, you can crawl through a narrow entrance tunnel into the Interior. Arrived, you can stand and admire the simple interior design in the burial chamber. Wonderful feeling of discovery! Don't forget to tuck the torch then again properly in the box!

  • Really nice cairn. Entrance is through a short front entrance chamber (similar to Maeshowe) - short people can duck walk and don't necessarily have to crawl on hands and knees. Nice, short walk up the hill with great views out over the entire area.
  • Interesting chambered cairn which is partly overlooked by its larger counterparts, but worth a visit.
  • My favorite place on the planet. When I touch the ground here I feel as if I'm touching the whole earth!
