Broughton House & Garden, Kirkcudbright

4.7
#2 of 13 in Things to do in Kirkcudbright
Right in the heart of Kirkcudbright, a pretty artists’ colony on the Solway Firth, this 18th-century Georgian house is the former home of Scottish painter E A Hornel, one of the Glasgow Boys.

Painstakingly preserved and recreated, it’s a living museum of Hornel’s life and work, packed to the rafters with his paintings and those of his contemporaries, as well as his vast library, which includes one of the world’s biggest collections of works by Robert Burns.

Nestled behind the house, backing on to the River Dee, is Hornel’s beautiful garden. Greatly influenced by his love of Japan, it’s a curious and colourful mixture of Eastern and Western horticulture and sculpture that is a delight to explore.
Broughton House & Garden is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Kirkcudbright Edition.

This property on the High Street in Kirkcudbright the Artist town is well worth a visit particularly on a wet Sunday afternoon . It was the home and studio of the Glasgow boy E A Hornel the Edwardian ...  more »

Although very much centred around a well known artist and his life, I found the actual house more interesting. Well worth a visit to see different styles and I particularly like the downstairs cellars...  more »

  • Lovely house and garden, the garden being one of our all time favourites. We've been visiting for years and it's been interesting to see the changes and developments over time both in the garden and the house. The Japanese anemones have always been a highlight for us (and the occasional friendly cat!). The house is impressive and it's a great opportunity to see Hornel's paintings in situ and to see how he was influenced by his travels and how he worked from photographs.
  • Unmissable. possibly the best of the many fascinating and beautiful places of all to visit in fabulous "artists' town" Kirkcudbright. McClellan's Castle (which is also great) being shut for repairs, we had all the more time in Hornel's gem house and garden - no bad thing at all.
  • Interesting place to visit with many oddities. Activity sheets provided for the children.
  • The garden is amazing!
  • A fascinating house in the middle of the beautiful Kirkudbright. The house itself houses many works of art and is lovely to explore. The garden is a real surprise running all the way down to the river and created with style and some humour
