Honister Slate Mine, Keswick

4.5
Known as the producer of the famous Westmorland green slate, Honister Slate Mine opened to the public in 1997 while its mining operations continued. One of the mine's main attractions is the via ferrata, a series of steel cables affixed to the mountainside. Climb the rock face while you are attached to these sturdy cables or take a guided tour of the historic mines and modern operating counterparts. • Nice visit and tour of the mine's. Not much room in the cafe area and had to wait some time for a free table. Friendly staff in the shop and ample parking. But wrap up warm can be rather blowy outside...  more »
  • Had really good weather for the Via Ferrata Extreme. Booked and paid for 5 of us. Glad they did a test section before moving on to the actual complete circuit as I decided not to do it (mum). It was t...  more »

  • We came here for the mine tour and had a really good time. The tour lasts about an hour and a half and to be honest I think it would be better if it was cut about 20 minutes shorter, and some of the waffle was cut out. It was a lot colder than we were expecting and you only went into 3 different rooms in the mine so it meant standing around for ages in one spot and we all got very cold! (Despite bringing lots of warm clothing!). The tour guide was very friendly, funny and informative, and we enjoyed the views on the way up to the mine! It was an honour to support such a great local business by buying tour tickets and lunch!
  • This experience is amazing. We did the climb the mine. Even though I am scared of heights and not too happy with the dark I decided to push myself. So glad I did. The climb was challenging but so very worth trying. I was totally buzzing. The staff were so friendly and the guide who took us through was really good and we had such a laugh. Be prepared for climbing up wet, cold metal hand and foot grips. You might start off cold but you'll soon warm up. Had a fantastic day. Can't wait to go back and do the outdoor via ferrata extreme one next time.
  • Had a wonderful trip round this afternoon. It's a trip thas great value. The sites and views are tremendous. A great credit to the team.
  • Stunning views, stunning workmanship and a good-value-for-money tour. I would have liked to have learnt more about the actual mine though, but I didn't as the guide spoke mostly about the founder of the mine, who tragically died a few years ago. It is obviously a poignant, traumatic event for staff to go through; however, the tour was supposed to be about the mine itself, but it came across as a history of the founder instead.
  • The tour was a little pricey for what it is but the staff were great, they even fitted us in on an extra tour as our family and a couple of other families arrived a little late for the 2pm tour. The tour guide was really good - he was knowledgeable and kept us entertained with funny stories along the way. The drive to and from the mine in the bus up the mountain side was a little unnerving but well worth it - the views alone were worth the trip. Theres more to this place than just the slate mine - if you're feeling brave you could climb along the mountain side on harnesses (though we were not brave enough for that!) Overall its worth a visit as its an interesting insight to Cumbrian history. Just a tip though - wear warm clothes as the mine gets cold!
