Honister Slate Mine, Keswick

4.5
Known as the producer of the famous Westmorland green slate, Honister Slate Mine opened to the public in 1997 while its mining operations continued. One of the mine's main attractions is the via ferrata, a series of steel cables affixed to the mountainside. Climb the rock face while you are attached to these sturdy cables or take a guided tour of the historic mines and modern operating counterparts. • Didn’t get time to do the tour (with regret) but the place is really interesting to visit and I loved the shop. The statues of ‘The Lost’ outside were thought provoking and of excellent craftsmanship.  more »

  • We visited the Honister Slate Mine very early on Easter Saturday morning. It was snowing, wild and stunningly beautiful. My husband, son and daughter-in-law thoroughly enjoyed the "epic" extreme via ferrata experience and I was invited to join them on the bus as far as their start point, which I really appreciated. While they were climbing I joined a tour of the mine which was brought to life by our informative and excellent guide, Donald. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit! Well done to all the friendly staff. You made us welcome right from my first phone call.
  • Did climb the mine and I would like to say thank you very much for such a fantastic day! At all times I felt looked after and the staff were brilliantly enthusiastic. Great way to get the adrenaline pumping would highly recommend
  • This is a really interesting place we were told about it by our host at the bed and breakfast we were staying at. It's In the middle of nowhere and you just seem to stumble across it. There are trips down the mine, a cafe, shop and you can even watch slate being worked on. You can have signs made whilst you wait (about an hour ) it was drizzly rain and misty when we arrived but still quite a few people were there. A must visit place highly recommended
  • I had my Stag do in Keswick & traveled here to do the Via Ferrata with friends, it's incredible! The only thing it needs to finish it off is a zip line! 😉
  • Went in a quite part of the season. Only 4 on the tour but had a great guide....Donald. Very informative and he had lots of great personal anecdotes. Lovely location and views of the local area, great drive up to the mine on the winding roads. Mine tour was reasonably priced and for the more adventurous you can climb the outside of the mine just like the miners did 200 years ago, but with more health and safety of course.
