Honister Slate Mine, Keswick
Categories: Tourist Spots, Mines
Known as the producer of the famous Westmorland green slate, Honister Slate Mine opened to the public in 1997 while its mining operations continued. One of the mine's main attractions is the via ferrata, a series of steel cables affixed to the mountainside. Climb the rock face while you are attached to these sturdy cables or take a guided tour of the historic mines and modern operating counterparts. Well worth the drive. Amazing views and very family friendly tour. Worth planning some extra time to explore the area on foot.
It was an insightful and entertaining tour with our guide Roland. The drive to Honister also boasts quite spectacular views. I would recommend it as a must-go during your visit to Lake District!
This place is a wonder to behold. Firstly it is based in the Honister Pass which IMHO is the most beautiful place in the Lake District. Secondly you get to go down into a slate mine which is fascinating, amazing, educational and stunning to look at all at the same time. For the adventurous there is an amazing climbing and zip line experience (I didn't but I'm told it is amazing). Finally the shop has the most incredible gifts, who knew what you could do with slate.
It must be five years since we first visited this amazing, beautiful place. We go back regularly when on the mainland and continue to be awestruck.
Went to the mine last year for the purpose of getting some slate for a waterfall and we were helped at reception and ended up with what is known as a boot full and I was so pleased with the amount I am returning again in March this year excellent place with great scenery. Thank You Honister Slate Mine. Brian Fuller.
