Honister Slate Mine, Keswick

4.6
Known as the producer of the famous Westmorland green slate, Honister Slate Mine opened to the public in 1997 while its mining operations continued. One of the mine's main attractions is the via ferrata, a series of steel cables affixed to the mountainside. Climb the rock face while you are attached to these sturdy cables or take a guided tour of the historic mines and modern operating counterparts. Nice visit and tour of the mine's. Not much room in the cafe area and had to wait some time for a free table. Friendly staff in the shop and ample parking. But wrap up warm can be rather blowy outside...  more »

  • Had a great time today on the Via Ferrata extreme - definitely the best way to climb a hill! Thanks to Sophie, her Dad and Brother for looking after us so well. Great shame they haven't yet managed to get the go ahead for the zip wire back down again! Even so would definitely recommend the experience. Friendly staff and great views.
  • Absolutely brilliant tour of the mine. Tori (think that's how you spell it) was a fantastic guide and included the children in everything, making the tour so interesting and our granddaughters loved it! 8n fact they want to go back to do a mine climb! If you're in the area Honister is so worth a visit.
  • We had an amazing time visiting the mines, fortunately we were able to experience the tour to ourselves. Our tour guide Donald was absolutely amazing. His wealth of knowledge and sense of humour made the visit more enjoyable. I also had the privilege of Donald and my boyfriend singing me 'Happy Birthday' in the mine as part of the tour which was epic. The story behind the mine is amazing. We will definitely be visiting back in the summer time to go on the Infinity bridge. The staff at Honister were super friendly and very down to earth!! Definitely would recommend this to anyone who is visiting Cumbria and looking for an adventure.
  • This place is a wonder to behold and most beautiful place in the Lake District.
  • A well run tour and a very interesting tour guide. The views from the pass are also spectacular.

Where to stay in Keswick

Cottages and B&Bs are scattered over the valley, and many offer views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. The town center's Victorian edifices often hide guestrooms that overlook the charming streets. Consider a B&B or inn with views of the hills close to the town center and enjoy the best of both worlds.
