  • Brilliant for all ages, the history of how the pencil first came about. Very interesting and nostalgic seeing the collection of coloured pencils in plastic wallets that I used as a child in the 60's. Spent a lot on new pens etc but well worth it.
  • Don't waste your money here. I paid £16.50 for a family ticket, to be told your free pencil was your ticket in. In to what? Went through a cave into what can only be described as an uninspiring room (next door) with a big pencil (Guinness World Record) and a few exhibits, oh and 2 videos on loop. (Nothing even close to being interactive to keep you and yours interested). We all just stopped open mouthed in disbelief, including my 9 year old. I'm all for history but you have to make it enjoyable for all. This attraction just didn't do it for the family, all bored within 5 minutes. I left feeling robbed and light in the wallet. Save your money and put it towards a National Trust membership. Now thats value for money! PB.
  • Revisiting for the first time since the flood. What a transformation. It is light and airy inside and I particularly liked the "graphite pencil" exterior. The staff are friendly and helpful and I wish them well. It will take a few visits to completely absorb all the information in the museum, and am looking forward to the resumption of classes. These cannot come soon enough as they are an inspiring experience, one returns home armed with materials purchased from the shop and a determination to continue drawing. Every good wish for the future. We will be back!!
  • Reopened and completely refurbished. Museum light airy and modern for the history of graphite and pencil making with interesting exhibits through the ages. The videocscreens show how the pencils are made at the factory. A fascinating process. The new classroom/drawing area is modern and equipped to a high standard with closing doors off the museum for art classes. The art classes are a terrific experience and hopefully will start again soon. The shop supplies every kind of art material that Derwent manufacture with lots of special offers together with art books. It is a drawers paradise. There are tubs of pencils and paper out for young and older children to experiment with. The cafe serves snacks and light meals together with good quality tea and coffee. Everything is new and the staff bend over backwards to make the visit experience special. They are just breaking the new premises in. A wonderful effort so far.
  • Informative but quite short and not much to do - sadly the exhibition got flooded a couple of years ago and so they've had to rebuild it in this small hut. Friendly staff though and I did the quiz - you get a prize :)

Cottages and B&Bs are scattered over the valley, and many offer views of the surrounding mountains and countryside.
