Step back in time at Portland Museum, housed in two 17th-century thatched cottages. The museum houses dinosaur bones, stone sarcophagi, World War II bombs, and a variety of personal items that once belonged to foreign invaders, pirates, convicts, sailors, itinerant workers, and artists. Check out the Victorian Corner showcasing a wedding dress of a local girl and household objects. There is also a collection related to writer Thomas Hardy, who used of the cottages as an inspiration for the setting of one of his novels. • Really friendly little museum, the staff are really knowledgeable and happy to chat.
  • Not bad at all. Pleasantly surprised. Exhibitions on all aspects of life and history on Portland. Sure, don't expect the British Museum but for a small town Museum its very good.
  • Very friendly and interesting museum with knowledgeable staff
