Founded by St. Columbo in 563 AD, the site is one of the oldest Christian sites in Western Europe. Monks at the monastery reputedly wrote the Book of Kells. Make a pilgrimage to the site from the mainland, take a look at the crosses dating from the 9th and 10th centuries, and wander through the remains of the medieval cloisters. • We spent a week on Iona at the B&B. We ordered a sack lunch each day and explored the island on foot. That was the only way to get around since you do not bring your vehicle on the island. You only see a small handful of cars and they belong to the residents there. We have such great memories of the place and the locals. Loved listening to their stories. We covered the entire island exploring different places everyday. Every time I see pictures I feel like I am back there for real. If I had one place I could visit over it would be Iona. Isle of Skye comes in second. You just never forget the impression people leave with you. Take me back!!!
