Steep yourself in the history of the Scotland at Iona Abbey, the first Christian monastery in Scotland. Founded by St. Columbo in 563 AD, the site is one of the oldest Christian sites in Western Europe. Monks at the monastery reputedly wrote the Book of Kells. • Clearly the Abbey means so much to the people who make long pilgrimages to visit, but it's also an interesting centrepiece of a visit to the charming island of Iona. I visited from Oban using a guided...  more »
  • The visit to the island of Iona is via a short boat trip from the mainland of Mull. Check first the times of the ferry if you are visiting in high season. There are two car parks on the mainland, one ...  more »

  • How far away this is? How peaceful? This place has a marvelous history in the Celtic Christian tradition. It is a very enchanting place to visit. I just arrived on the island and I am amazed already.
  • I came over to Iona for the day from a stay at the Camas Centre tucked away in a hidden bay on Mull. Iona is just such a stunning, tranquil place. there's a sense of just slowing down as you leave the ferry even more so than there is already from being on Mull. The Abbey again, just stunning and for that alone it's worth the visit.
  • Beautiful Spiritual and educational. Everything the island stands for and is. I love this place.
  • NB: This review is for the Island of Iona in general, rather than the abbey in particular (which is not exceptional inside). If you travel to Mull, I would really recommend travelling to Iona on a sunny day. The island is just stunning and the abbey looks marvellous from outside. The trip takes only 10 minutes (from Fionnphort) and is very cheap.
  • Worth the trip from Mull. Make sure you get the audio guide because there isn't much information posted
