  • It was an interesting place to visit and read all about Barra and Vatersay. Lots of photos and archives to look through. Interesting memorabilia to look at too.
  • Visited the centre a couple of times whilst in Barra. Lots of social history on display , as well as, loads of material in folders to browse through. Give's real insight into Clan McNeil's history and...  more »
  • This is a small museum, very interesting but rather dated. The kids might get bored since there is nothing interactive or games dedicated to them (at least not in the days when I was there), but for adults with an interest in history or humanities is a true gem. The panels are told various historical events which occurred in some places on the island, who wrote them has put a lot of care and attention, which is reflected in a narrative that will not be boring. There are several exhibits showcasing concerning the places described in the panels, making it even more exciting reading. In the Center there are tables and access to large folders related to archaeology, history, language and place names of the island. There are also thesis for consultation and a location for those interested in research about their ancestors. There are some books for sale but nothing extraordinary. The staff could be a bit more engaging but definitely depends on the mood and the day. It also has a small bar but have not purchased anything so I wouldn't know if you recommend it or not.
