Having regard to the photos on the internet, we had expected more. Dated and neglected. Definitely skip it!

I have always been a fan of covered markets, and when I'm in a place that has one I always try to visit it. Countries like Finland and Sweden offer the best of the genre, but elsewhere you will come across some like that (granted refer to the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul!). In comparison, the Victorian Market in Inverness is not great thing, although its tunnels crossed, in itself is beautiful. The problem is that there are shops inside, mostly rather mundane or cheesy. If there were really interesting, typical products and especially grocery stores, we would gain a lot, and with appropriate decorations would be an absolute must and pleasant for the tourist. My partner envisioned as might be nice at Christmas time ...

  • Built by the Town Council in 1869-70, The Victorian Market is one of only five Victorian arcades remaining in Scotland - it was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1890s and rebuilt again a few years later. It is a fascinating place with small stalls of curious shops. Don't miss Story's chocolate shop! and it's a great place to stop for a coffee in one of the coffee shops.
  • Somewhat of historic interest, the great majority of the shops are of little interest and excessively standardly touristic. (a few "traditional" jeweler and a bagpipe seller would be the most interesting and pittoresque shops in a disappointing ensemble.)
  • Almost everything was closed or otherwise not really interesting. Need some diversity in the shops themselves, and the place needs a deep clean... Not really impressed, but the potential is there for something fun and unique.
  • Usual small collection of individual shops selling good not normally available in more commercial shops.
  • Interesting collection of tourist oriented shops, all very friendly.

Where to stay in Inverness

You’ll easily find bed and breakfasts and guesthouses convenient to the center of town in Inverness, from the cozy to more large-scale places, often with a view down to the River Ness, which later joins Loch Ness. For more affordable accommodation, look for a few budget hostels, as well as camping and caravan sites. If you've got a car, consider staying just outside the city in a quiet village, where you can explore the city by day and nature by evening. Since this is the largest city in the Highlands, you'll probably be able to find something last minute, but if you have a specific type of accommodtion in mind, it's a good idea to book in advance.
