Where to stay in Inverness

You’ll easily find bed and breakfasts and guesthouses convenient to the center of town in Inverness, from the cozy to more large-scale places, often with a view down to the River Ness, which later joins Loch Ness. For more affordable accommodation, look for a few budget hostels, as well as camping and caravan sites. If you've got a car, consider staying just outside the city in a quiet village, where you can explore the city by day and nature by evening. Since this is the largest city in the Highlands, you'll probably be able to find something last minute, but if you have a specific type of accommodtion in mind, it's a good idea to book in advance.

  • I loved the extent of the collection of books. Wished it was organised, but half the fun is trying to hunt for that perfect book. I could have walked out with my arms piled high, going to have to retu...  more »

  • Leakey's Bookshop offers a wide selection of biographies, histories, and memoirs. The books are in great condition, and there are many editions that I have not found in the United States. While visiting Scotland, I bought two multi-volume series and had them shipped to the U.S. Charles Leakey carefully wrapped each book in paper and padding. The books arrived quickly and were in the same condition as when I bought them. I highly recommend Leakey's Bookshop.
  • What a wonderful book shop. You could get lost for literally hours in here perusing the shelves and finding the odd gem.
  • This has to be the most charming book store I've ever been in and the selection of books is wide enough to interest everyone. The atmosphere is cozy and warm inviting you to stay awhile.
  • Holy smokes this place has a billion books jammed into everywhere. Need a few more good seats so I can enjoy it for a while longer, otherwise this is a great curiosity in the city.
  • Really interesting, books organized by topic, but not organized within those topics. Some nice maps and original prints from early 20th and 19th century. Worth visiting when you're in town!
