Inverness Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Inbhir Nis) sits on a cliff overlooking the River Ness in Inverness, Scotland. The red sandstone structure, displaying an early castellated style, is the work of a few nineteenth-century architects. William Burn (1789-1870) designed the Sheriff Court, Joseph Mitchell (1803-1883) the bastioned enclosing walls, and Thomas Brown II (1806-c.72) the District Court, originally built as a prison. It is built on the site of an 11th-century defensive structure. Until the 30th of March 2020 it housed Inverness Sheriff Court: this role has now been moved to the Inverness Justice Centre. To visit Inverness Castle on your holiday in Inverness, and find out what else Inverness has to offer, use our Inverness.
There has been a castle on this site for many centuries. In April 2017 the north tower of the castle was opened to the public as a view point. At present, only the castle grounds and the north tower are open to the public. The remainder of the castle is not open to the public.

The castle is a really beautiful focal point that you can see from all angles in Inverness. We really enjoyed taking photos of it and having it in the background of them and would definitely... more »

Castle closed and surrounded by story boards which stop you seeing the castle. What you can see looks beautiful. Can only walk upto the viewing point. Lovely place to take a seat with a take... more »

Great to visit with children, lot's of things to discover and generally a very nice castle with a great history. Parking is limited, so be mindful of that if you plan to visit. You might have to park in the street and walk a bit.

The castle is quite nice when you see it from outside but.. 5 pounds for a view point on Inverness, are you serious?! I didn't know it was a such beautiful city...
-
I visited today and most parts of the castle was closed off to visitors which is very disappointing just one view point of the 11 was accessible. And it sounded like it's like that all the time. The castle itself is beautiful on the outside and the parts we saw on the inside...seating areas available outside. Information rooms on the inside...be advised you will have to climb 4-5 storeys no lifts available.

this looks like a pretty neat place. but all you can do is climb a turret for views of the city. pretty cool that most of it is still in use as a courthouse
-
A must see. Children will enjoy the short animated movies. Climb to the top gives a wonderful panoramic view of the town.
