Chambercombe Manor, Ilfracombe

(4.4/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
Chambercombe Manor is a Norman manor house located near Ilfracombe, Devon, which dates back to the 11th century and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in the United Kingdom.HistoryThe Manor was owned by the Champernon family until the 15th century, when it passed through various families until 1979 when it was donated to the Chambercombe Manor Trust. The house lost its status as an estate at some point, and for a long time it was used as a farmhouse. However, it did not lose its former grandeur during this period, and today the manor is open to the public. The house contains eight period rooms available to view, ranging from Elizabethan to Victorian.

  • We went to the Manor on Tuesday August, 9th We had the 12md tour. The guide who took us around was very good. She knew her stuff, she was very interesting to listen too. All the volunteers were very friendly and helpful. We had our lunch in the Buttery which was spotless clean and the staff in the Buttery were very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed looking around the gardens. On the day we had a very enjoyable day.
  • Fantastic guided tour it was fascinating. Aĺl the staff so friendly would definitely visit again.
  • We had a fantastic tour this morning. The body found in the hidden room and the mystery in ravelled. We did not witness any thing whilst we were there. However we took lots of photos as we walked around and have an orb on the staircase and 2 as we entered the kitchen from the bedroom. Now trying to find an explanation as I have never had them appear before this. We could have stayed in the gift shop for ages listening to Dave. He should be recorded and CDs sold with his tales and knowledge. Yes , we really did enjoy and recommend a visit.
  • Very interesting visit. Run by really friendly, knowledgeable volunteers. Good, simple menu in the restaurant. Well worth a visit
  • Amazing place, admission charges are reasonable, staff are so friendly from the guy in the gift shop to the lovely ladies in the coffee shop. The food is of a very high quality and all freshly made on site. David in the house is a fountain of knowledge and keen to pass on his knowledge.
