Chambercombe Manor, Ilfracombe

4.2
Chambercombe Manor is a Norman manor house located near Ilfracombe, Devon, which dates back to the 11th century and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in the United Kingdom.HistoryThe Manor was owned by the Champernon family until the 15th century, when it passed through various families until 1979 when it was donated to the Chambercombe Manor Trust. The house lost its status as an estate at some point, and for a long time it was used as a farmhouse. However, it did not lose its former grandeur during this period, and today the manor is open to the public. The house contains eight period rooms available to view, ranging from Elizabethan to Victorian.

  • Very interesting Manor house full of history. A guided tour with an entertaining lady guide who regaled us with ghostly stories and haunted house information. Of dead body discovered in a sealed room. Well worth a visit.
  • Excellent guide - very knowledgeable and interesting stories to tell. Beautiful extensive gardens with some pretty walks. Disappointed with the cafe ...when we went we were told "tea and cakes are all that's left " but the people on the next table had sandwiches! I asked for my chocolate cake to be served warm but it wasn't. Think the staff just wanted to close early. Shame, but otherwise it was a good visit and we would go back.
  • I thought this was a great place to visit... interesting history...some fantastic furniture and i thought an amazing four poster in the tudor room... where does the tunnel behind the fireplace lead?? I had the place completely to myself on my visit...except the guide..sadly no paranormal activity ... no cold spots, no orbs, no tapping, no touching, no dark figures... nothing... history definately trumps the paranormal... the gardens look like they could do with a little tlc but otherwise pleasant to walk round...
  • Very interesting place in beautiful peaceful grounds. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour of the h Manor most interesting. would recommend this place to visit.
  • shocking and not in a good way. Arrived at 12.15 the gift shop was closed, so we walked to the manor house where a sign said next tour 2pm. We went for a walk around the gardens to kill some time. got back to the cafe for a drink and I enquired about the tour where I was redirected back to the shop. However, as a coach had just arrived there was no space until 3pm. if there had been a notice warning of this or advice on the website then this disgraceful mess could have been avoided. My personal experience says don't bother going.
