  • Ossuary was closed, not open until 1st May, fortunately I have visited previously. It is quite an experience. The church has many memorials to our Empire builders, who died whilst abroad of disease, or in the Indian mutiny. One family, the Deedes, is well remembered. 19 children were born to a Sophia Deedes, amazing! I like old churches, not for religious reasons, but for the local history that can be found within. St. Leonard's Church is well worth a visit.
  • A grand 13thc. church with later additions. The church is located high up overlooking the old port of Hythe. The crypt holds a macabre ossuary - a collection of ancient bones and skulls! The church is entered through the porch on the south side facing the town. It is built on a sloping site so that the church climbs up towards the high altar, a dramatic effect! St. Leonards is open most days for visitors but the ossuary is only open in the summer months after Easter.
  • St Leonard's Church sits on top of a rather steep hill that makes driving a car up to it very precarious. The grounds are rather lovely and the crypt keeper was a pleasure to talk to.  The 2000 skulls of St Leonard's Bonehouse are from citizens of Hythe who were buried in the churchyard and then dug up in the 13th Century when the church was extended over their graves. Later, other bones were disturbed when new graves were dug and their bones have been added to the pile.
  • Went to a friend's wedding at this lovely looking, and well kept, church on the top of a hill in the pretty town of Hythe. Great occasion.
  • Lovely well loved church the crypt was amazing.
