Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Holywood

Simulating life 100 years ago, Ulster Folk & Transport Museum gives visitors a historical Irish cultural experience. The folk section dedicates 69 hectares (170 acres) to a selection of old Irish buildings and dwellings, collected from all over the country and rebuilt brick by brick. Stroll through Ballycultra, a recreated Ulster village, as you chat with costumed guides. The transport section houses an extensive collection of horse-drawn carriages, electric trams, motorbikes, fire engines, and vintage cars, telling the story of transportation in Ireland. The Irish Railway Collection features 150 years of railway history. The museum houses a permanent Titanic exhibition documenting the construction, voyage, and sinking of the vessel. We did not visit the Transport part because the Folk Museum is already very rich and we no longer had enough time. But we enjoyed our visit, especially to the Baird's Print Shop, where we had an interesting and friendly discussion (despite our uncertain English!)

My wife and I were delighted by the care taken to present this large collection in an accessible way. Ireland is replete with small scale museums, but this large site can fill a day. The space devoted...  more »
  • My favourite place to visit in N.Ireland. a complete day out. Very good value for money. Great for the kids of all ages with a lot of hands on things for them to do. Staff are friendly and helpful with lots of knowledge. Really recommend a visit here!!
  • Maybe it's just me, but museum not a thing for me.. OK, to see how Irish people live before.. I went in one of an old house, saw a cracker with butter on it, grab one, and heard a voice of an elderly man (dressed in old Irish clothes-the host) , said, "look at this guy, he never knew what it is, it could be anything". Was surprised, cause if you don't like people getting some snack, then don't put something for public to grab,,as simple as that. Won't going back..
  • Amazing location, actually 2 separate sites that are hard to cover in 1 day if done in detail. There is a bus most days that takes visitors from one location to the other or it's a good 10 min walk if you fancy it. Best to go early in the day if you can. The Folk museum is mostly outside, the transport museum mostly inside. Plenty of opportunities for tea stops in both locations. They have special events on at key times. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in history or any form of transport. There is also a Titanic exhibition in the transport museum. We have been 3 times now in 4 years..and will be back again.
  • Always a great day out for either the family or anyone visiting the area. The Folk and Transport exhibitions can be viewed separately if you've not time to see both but I would encourage you to see the lot. The folk part of the museum is mostly outdoors and involves a bit of walking so just bear that in mind when you chose your footwear.
  • We visited this place during our first trip to Northern Ireland and we're so pleased we did. This is a huge museum, split over two sites either side of the A2 to the east of Belfast. Allow a whole day for your visit as there are so many interesting things to see. In the cafeteria on the south-side of the museum we had the best Irish Stew we've tasted in the whole island of Ireland.
