Lindisfarne Priory, Holy Island

(1,500+ reviews on the web)
Island
Lindisfarne Priory stands as a tidal island that becomes cut-off from England twice a day. A quaint location with a tiny population of 160 people, the island contains natural wonder and a rich, if not bloody history. "The Holy Island of Lindisfarne" survived a bloodthirsty and murderous attack on the monastery from the Vikings in 793 CE. If you like nature and serenity, spend some time walking, bird-watching, or fishing in the remote northern part of the island. If you prefer religion, history, or the arts, visit the monastery and the 16th-century castle, both of which are located on the southern part of the island. Remember to check the tides before you access the island, especially if you intend to visit for only one day. With our custom trip planner, Holy Island attractions like Lindisfarne Priory can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Arrived as group of seven with a dog. Lovely walk with a beautiful View of the sea. Ice cream van was also outside. Kids loved running around and Grownups enjoyed the historic buildings.  more »
  • A Fantastic trip to Lindisfarne and the priory in particular. The day was overcast and not particularly mild, but wrapped as we were it wasn't a problem. The Priory is a fantastic ruin. I have to say ...  more »
  • I had distinctly wanted to visit here as it always looks great on tv. On way to Scotlands NC500, I diverted to here. Booked a caravan site for my campervan and set off across the causeway. You can ima...  more »

  • Brilliant place to visit. Plenty of gift shops and cafes. Be prepared to spend a few hours here.
  • Lots of history, fantastic area to visit castle was closed due to renovations, be careful with the tides as you can end up spending longer than you had planned for
  • Surprisingly small with a very small museum and not much information actually in the priory itself. Still historically significant and interesting.
  • This was a great place to visit for the day. Make sure you check the tide schedules the day before and allow enough time to also see the castle! The history and age of this place is amazing, and definitely worth a visit. The priory and ruins don't take long to look around, but the town has a few gift shops that you can go look in when you're done at the priory.
  • Good museum and historical site, just admission is a little more than I'd want to pay for what you get.
