Hever Castle & Gardens, Hever

4.7
#1 of 71 in Museums in Kent
At Hever Castle & Gardens, see where the famous second wife of King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, spent her childhood. Boleyn's brief marriage to the King--and subsequent execution when he sought a new wife--made her a key figure in the Church of England's 16th-century break from the Vatican. Today, you can see portraits from her era, paintings, furniture, and tapestries in the castle where she grew up. Outside, view Italian, rose, and Tudor gardens and walk around the water maze and shrubs trimmed into statues. Special events, such as gardening sessions with the Head Gardener and jousting tournaments, happen throughout the year. Check the schedule before you visit. You can also purchase an audio tour of the site at the Hever Shop, Information Centre, or entrance. Although the castle itself is rather small, the grounds are vast and offer plenty of options to keep your family entertained. The gardens are impressive in size and diversity and well maintained, the water maze will keep your children (or even yourself) jumping and laughing for a good half hour, the yew maze is perfect for getting lost in... and if everything else fails, you can rent a boat or try your hand at archery! I visited in July, on the occasion of Hever in Bloom, and I consider it a day very well spent. Highly recommend!

My wife is intrigued by anything related to Anne Boleyn. She reaserched a lot before our trip and found that Hever Castle was Anne Boleyns childhood home. So, we hopped on a train and took about an hour ride out of London and then a small hike to arrive at this well preserved piece of history. The castle is not huge but it is still very impressive. Non flash photography is allowed inside the castle. There were not a lot of people here and at times it seemed like we had the gardens to ourselves. Take a walk through the gardens back to the lake and enjoy the view there as well. We were there in February so the gardens were not in bloom and the fountains were not running, but it was worth the trip. A little tip about getting there from the train station is to follow a path through the fields. The path is marked with small signs (I will post photos) and the gates along the path are NOT locked. We took a longer route to the castle because someone thought the gates were locked. Get out of London and explore. It's not hard and you will be glad you did.

Lovely castle! It's not a big castle but feminine and well maintained. This castle has a nice rose garden and a small garden with pond. There are a big green space with topiary, very pretty. We went there week day, less busy, I believe that it could get busy during school holidays. Children likes the water maze. There is a nice café inside the rose garden, not too expensive, we sat at an outside table and had cold drinks. The only downside is that there is no bus running between the castle and the train station. We drove to the castle.

So lovely. I like that there are beehives right outside the castle moat. Gardens a spectacular. A must for the Anne Boleyn enthusiast. We took the train and there is no service to the castle from there. It's a lovely walk, and luckily we had fine weather. But there isn't a bus, rickshaw, bicycle or donkey available for the mile journey from station to castle. Wear good walking shoes because the gardens are worth it.
