Hever Castle & Gardens, Hever

#1 of 99 in Museums in Kent
At Hever Castle & Gardens, see where the famous second wife of King Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, spent her childhood. Boleyn's brief marriage to the King--and subsequent execution when he sought a new wife--made her a key figure in the Church of England's 16th-century break from the Vatican. Today, you can see portraits from her era, paintings, furniture, and tapestries in the castle where she grew up. Outside, view Italian, rose, and Tudor gardens and walk around the water maze and shrubs trimmed into statues. Special events, such as gardening sessions with the Head Gardener and jousting tournaments, happen throughout the year. Check the schedule before you visit. You can also purchase an audio tour of the site at the Hever Shop, Information Centre, or entrance. • Great day out for the children. Jousting during the summer. A water maze (take spare clothes for the kids) and an amazing new play ground (complete with handy coffee and ice cream shop). The castle is wonderful as are the gardens. Boating on the lake, and good restaurants. So much to do!
  • This is over 900 year old castle and it’s gardens. Now if you’ve been into few castles here and there, inside may not be as appealing. But their gardens was definitely of that and more. Immaculate! It’s a great place to chill or take the kids to. Few quaint restaurants and shops along the way to take a break and replenish. Beautifully kept grounds were our favorite with Romanesque statues and columns. Must walk to the lake in awe as this is still within ones premises!
  • Beautiful grounds and gardens. The castle is also nice and worth going inside as lots of history. We went on a jousting event day, which was really good. They actually joust! Some good stunts about and hour long show. Make sure you arrive for the day out early as we did not see it all and got there about 12.
  • Amazing day out and great opportunity to teach children about history. I suggest visiting in the summer when there’s lots happening such as jousting and medieval battles. It’s worth going inside the castle as well as there are letters from Ann Boleyn and King Henry VIII on display. I’m sure it is beautiful during any season. The gardens are really pretty as well.
  • Absolutely cracking day, the gardens and lake/ moat are looking wonderful despite the drought. Had a delightful afternoon watching the jousting tournament which was excellently staged with tongues firmly in cheek and the horses were beautifully turned out with the knights showing wonderful horsemanship and fitness in the jousting and sword fighting. The food was a little limited and quite dear for what was offered hence the reduction in rating. However, all in all, a really enjoyable experience which I can thoroughly recommend.
