Nuffield Place is a country house near the village of Nuffield in the Chiltern Hills in South Oxfordshire, England, just over 4 miles (6 km) east of Wallingford.

The house was completed in 1914. Sir William Morris (later created Viscount Nuffield) had it enlarged in 1933 and lived there until his death in 1963. Lord Nuffield was buried at Holy Trinity Parish Church in the village, and bequeathed Nuffield Place and its contents to Nuffield College, Oxford, as a museum. The college has gifted the house and part of the estate to the National Trust.
Lord Nuffield was fond of clocks and his bedroom contains eight. His bedroom also has a miniature workshop, in a cupboard, containing a vice and metalworking tools, as well as a jar containing Lord Nuffield's own preserved appendix.

  • What a down to earth character Lord Nuffield must have been - the house is in no way grand and, unfortunately, it does look in need of rather a lot of TLC (I'm sure the many flat roofs don't help...  more »

  • Extremely interesting and learned a lot. Had no idea how much lord Nuffield (William Morris who founded Morris cars) gave to society and how simply he and his wife lived. Fantastic to see the house as it was when they finally left it after they died. Well worth the visit .
  • So much to learn about and from Baron Nuffield... including what "MG" stands for! What a generous man he must have been... donating 11 billion pounds in today's money of his fortune to good causes. Few billionaires of today's world could be recommended a visit to pick up some ideas about philanthropy.
  • Superb house, was the home of William Morris, founder of Morris Motors. Whilst not a large house, it is full of his memorabilia and makes you appreciate the reasonably modest way that he lived. He donated most of his wealth to good causes. Well worth visiting.
  • A really very interesting house to visit, especially if you remember how genteel life was, for the middle classes in the 40s/50s. William Morris comes over as a very modest, unassuming, highly successful business man. Fine house and beautiful gardens.
  • Full of rich Engineering history. Lord Nuffield and his Lady Wife, although multi millionaires, lived a very unostentatious life....wonderful time capsule... brilliant gardens...well worth a visit.. Highly recommended...
