Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley
(4.3/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
If peace and tranquillity is what you seek from a family day out in Yorkshire, then Rievaulx Abbey is the perfect choice. Set in a remote valley in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, Rievaulx is one of the most complete, and atmospheric, of England’s abbey ruins. It’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular visitor attractions in the North.

Learn about the monks in medieval times – how they devoted their lives to spiritual matters and at the same time established a thriving business to become one of the wealthiest monasteries in Britain.

Then enjoy some delicious Yorkshire fare in the café before taking a stroll around the beautiful grounds.

  • Fascinating National Trust property with superb views down to Rievaulx abbey . The staff were very helpful and the talk in the Ionic temple was interesting.
  • The temples are a bit of a let down but it is worth a visit just for the views of the Abbey! The Abbey is English Heritage and the Terrace National Trust, so two entrance fees!
  • Once you have visited Rievaulx Abbey you may be forgiven for dismissing the Rievaulx Terrace but do so at your peril! The main attractions of this beautiful venue are the views which are spectacular. ...  more »

  • I warmed to this place and have now been a couple of times. It's located in the middle of nowhere, down country lanes and there's not enough parking (although I think there is overflow) and it's expensive to park if you're not a member [English Heritage]. The Abbey ruins are worth visiting and there's quite a lot of them to look around. It's safe enough to let the kids wander, and there are handheld devices to explain what you're looking at (kids and adult versions). The shiney new cafe is really nice and there's a small museum to look around.
  • Amazing English Heritage site. Audio tour was very worthwhile and adds much to understand the historical significance of the Abbey. We filled the better part of the afternoon with our visit.
  • Great place to visit, just to explore and try and get the feeling of what is was like. Friendly staff very helpful
  • Went here today was absaloutly brilliant, crisp autumn sunshine ☀ picnic in the grounds and beautiful surroundings 👌 what more can I say, visit riveaulx abbey!
  • A beautiful ruin, plenty to explore with the kids, plenty of lovely lawn for picnics and games, could easily spend most of the day here. Would definitely recommend this place. Impressive.
