Helmsley Walled Garden, Helmsley

Garden · Nature / Park
Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. Originally providing the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1, it fell into dereliction after it closed its doors for the final time in 1984. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers. Attractions include restored glasshouses full of color, double herbaceous borders, a brand new clematis garden showcasing over 150 different varieties. Hours change seasonally so please check website for all up-to-date information. • What a beautiful setting for a garden with the castle as a magnificent backdrop and we were lucky that the sun was shining too. Even though it was October there was still plenty to see in the garden....  more »
  • Lovely, peaceful garden. Fantastic charity working hard to promote the healing benefits of gardening. Beautiful setting with views of the castle. I could sit there all day
  • Lovely location. Would have been 5 except food service is a big slow, 45 min wait for a sandwich. Perhaps need bigger prep area and 1 of 2 more staff?
  • Lovely setting with great potential which is unfortunately unfulfilled. Having paid £8 entry each we were disappointed to find a garden with lots of weeds & overgrown areas. The planted areas are also quite unimaginative. We have visited a lot of gardens but won't be returning or recommending to friends.
  • Love this walled garden, a great place for anyone who loves flowers and macro photography!
  • We are hoping to get to you in September. We love the photos and the gardens look wonderful. Thank you Helmsley.
