#4 of 13 in Things to do in Helmsley
Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. Originally providing the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1, it fell into dereliction after it closed its doors for the final time in 1984. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers.

Attractions include restored glasshouses full of colour, double herbaceous borders, a brand new clematis garden showcasing over 150 different varieties. Fruit trees clothe the walls and the grounds, including a special collection of Yorkshire apple cultivars and vegetable plots provide some of the ingredients for the delicious dishes in the Vinehouse Café.

  • A beautiful walled garden in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, Sat Nav is YO62 5AH. Park the car at the Pay and Display car park only a short walk away. Easy walking around all this garden with a Cafe, Plant Centre and Gift Shop. This is our second visit, the first was in late summer with a beautiful show of flowers and shrubs as well as a in the vegetable garden but this year we went on the 31st May and saw the Laburnum Arch in full bloom and lovely borders with many late spring plants to see. A lovely water feature Rill with a small elephant fountain. We ended the afternoon with a nice scone and homemade lemonade in The Vine House Cafe and then looked at the large collection of plants for sale in the Plant Centre before leaving. I chose two healthy perennials for our garden and they are looking good. See it on my YouTube channel. chaldon2view.
  • This is a lovely place to spend time. Fantastic food too.
  • On this sunny day this place is a delight, delicious cakes and a good brew
  • Fantastic place with great food, people and plants - 5*
  • A medium sized flat walled garden with fruit trees, vegetables and flowers. The vegetables are used in the cafe so you know most of the food is fresh there are plant sales as well. The ticket is a type where you can visit as many times as you want in 12 months. A worthwhile visit.
