Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall, Haydon Bridge

Historic Site · Tourist Spot
The remains of a Roman barrack block, Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall is a symmetrical stone wall ruin that rests high on Hadrian's Wall. Inside are the remains of a Roman toilet and partitioning walls that divided the structure into rooms. The massive stone structures protected over 800 Roman soldiers while they were stationed at the site. The fortress provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. A nearby museum offers a model of the intact structure and a history of the Romans in England. • First off, it is a bit of a steep walk from the car park. It wasn’t a problem for us but be prepared. We started off in the museum, it is quite small however it is full of really interesting...  more »
  • At the moment it is book in advance. I think if you pay the £9 for entry the carpark ought to be free not £3. Fair enough if you are not. Be prepared and dressed for the weather and for a walk . Lots....  more »

  • This is a good place to visit, even in the pouring rain (as we had). The little museum and film is very interesting, and gives great context to the ruins you can explore, and how they would have looked and been used. We enjoyed the view of Hadrian's wall stretching out on either side of the fort, and the various information plaques around the fort with more information about each section. A really great look into that part of British history! Staff were friendly and helpful, as always at this kind of attraction throughout the UK.
  • We couldn't have picked a worst day to visit weather wise so we didn't take full advantage of our visit. There is so much history here. The information is easily absorbed and interesting. There is a slightly hilly walk to get to the fort and wall from the car park. It's good paths and the staff are friendly and will explain everything
  • I enjoyed seeing this place very much. A word of warning, there is a bit of a walk up to the wall and museum that some might consider significant. If you have any walking issues, this may not be ideal for you. If you're ok with that, then you will enjoy the history and the opportunity to observe the genius of Roman engineering.
  • Wonderful ruins to visit if one likes such places. For those walking along Hadrian's wall, this is on the way and a nice addition to the trip. There is detailed information available at the site and one can clearly see the engineering prowess of the Roman legions for themselves. Definitely recommend. Plenty of parking space and if you are a National Trust or English Heritage Member its even better as this is a jointly managed site.
  • Loved the extensive ruins uncovered there and the fact you could walk in it. Made it super educational and a bit of a thrill too. Good visit! If you can only visit one fort on Hadrian's wall, this should probably be it. There is a good quantity of exposed remains and the setting is wonderful. The wall extends in both directions for a considerable way,
