The ruin is very good again backed up and the plant is very well maintained. The entrance fee of £4 is justified, the castle is not as so often visited such as, for example, Linlithgow! Very friendly and informative reception, the castle is in the "Nowhere" and the way there is a single track road, 30 km from Hawick, but good passable. Rewards you get from a distinctive architecture, finally I know no other building of this time with an H plan. But for Maria - fans an absolute "must"! Legendary their secret, lonely ride over here, to meet her lover and later husband of Bothwell. Here you can feel the breath of history in this much-storey Castle actually: huge and impressive.

  • definitely a hidden jem and spent a good few hours here...loved the history and landscape
  • Looks impressive . Closed over the winter months and when we visited in November so could only view from the road.
  • Loved Hermitage Castle, fantastic history and very spooky!! beautiful scenery all around ans the wee walk to the chapel ruins was lovely my family had a great day out :)
  • A great location for a day out despite the dark history of the castle. We had a great time exploring the castle and grounds and lucked out for a beautiful day.
  • Very atmospheric, bleak and quite intact.
