Stanage Edge, Hathersage

Stanage Edge, or simply Stanage is a gritstone escarpment in the Peak District, England, famous as a location for climbing. The northern part of the edge forms the border between the High Peak of Derbyshire and Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Its highest point is High Neb at 458m above sea level. Areas of Stanage were quarried in the past to produce grindstones, and some can still be seen on the hillside—carved, but never removed.A paved packhorse road ran along the top of the edge, and remains of it can be seen, as can remains of the Long Causeway Roman road which works its way over the edge on its route from Templeborough to Brough-on-Noe, crossing Hallam Moor and passing Stanedge Pole, an ancient waymarker on the route to Sheffield. Some cairns along the top are even older, and there is a well-known cave in the cliff known as Robin Hood's Cave. More recent features include early 20th-century drinking basins, designed to collect pure rainwater for grouse to drink.

  • Stanage Edge has some great climbing routes, although can be busy on good days. Excellent for children to play among the rocks and to walk along the tops with stunning views down into the valley towar...  more »

  • What is not to like about Stanage? Climb, walk, run or just stand and gawp. All this within 25 minutes of Sheffield city centre. Whatever, the views here will never get jaded, and each change of weather will give you a different aspect of this amazing place
  • awesome rock formation that's definitely worth checking out. there's a car park nearby and it's a short walk that's not too difficult. people rock climb here too. you can get awesome photos sitting on the edge and also looking out.
  • Short, achievable steep walk up a small cliff for an ok view. The rock formations are interesting but I wouldn't say it was worth going out of your way to visit.
  • A bit of a hike to the top. Nice view but that's about it
  • Great escape from civilisation, good bouldering too but is best if you can climb v5+ if your an indoor climber
