(3.5/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
The Jerwood Gallery is a museum of contemporary British art located on The Stade in Hastings, East Sussex and operated by the Jerwood Foundation. The gallery opened in March 2012 and cost £4m to build. The gallery contains both temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection that includes work from artists including: L. S. Lowry, Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Caulfield, Maggi Hambling, Craigie Aitchison and Prunella Clough.ArchitectureThe building was designed by Hana Loftus and Tom Grieve from the architecture firm HAT Projects. The outside of the gallery building is covered with over 8,000 black tiles that were glazed in Kent. In The Observer, the architecture critic Rowan Moore says that the Jerwood building "is not embarrassed by the stuff and clobber around it, and does not embarrass them". Moore concludes that the building is "a simple and straightforward place for viewing art".Wallpaper described the gallery as "a perfectly formed, modest space, that doesn't try too hard".

  • This is a small but nice modern, art gallery. Not too expensive but not cheap for the scale of what is on display. However there were some really interesting pieces around Picasso and a great collection of self portraits. The visiting exhibition we saw wasn't that good but this rotates quite frequently so worth looking at the program to see if there is something interesting that you want to see. The cafe is nice with a balcony overlooking all the old fresh fish stalls and fishing boats.
  • Great gallery. Beautifully laid out and maintained. Some wonderful artists here.
  • This gallery has everything everyone wants from a gallery. Exciting exhibitions especially the one they have which is the Marcus Harvey collection.
  • Absolutely lovely gallery with a good range of concessions - locals get a special rate so get someone from Hastings to take you! Staff are pleasant and engaging, and the building is deceptively large, which makes it a pleasure to explore. The miniature railway goes right by one of the rear windows which acts as an occasional extra surprise as well!
  • Fabulous modern British art gallery.
