The Jerwood Gallery is a museum of contemporary British art located on The Stade in Hastings, East Sussex and operated by the Jerwood Foundation. The gallery opened in March 2012 and cost £4m to build. The gallery contains both temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection that includes work from artists including: L. S. Lowry, Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Caulfield, Maggi Hambling, Craigie Aitchison and Prunella Clough.ArchitectureThe building was designed by Hana Loftus and Tom Grieve from the architecture firm HAT Projects. The outside of the gallery building is covered with over 8,000 black tiles that were glazed in Kent. In The Observer, the architecture critic Rowan Moore says that the Jerwood building "is not embarrassed by the stuff and clobber around it, and does not embarrass them". Moore concludes that the building is "a simple and straightforward place for viewing art".Wallpaper described the gallery as "a perfectly formed, modest space, that doesn't try too hard".

  • Went to Hastings for the day, had a great time visiting the Jerwood Gallery, the exhibitors were very ecletic and interesting, also had a lovely meal in the cafe upstairs.
  • I had heard good things about the Jerwood so I was determined to visit it. It's in a good location, blending in with the adjacent fishing huts and with a good view over the boats and the sea beyond. B...  read more »

  • Absolutely lovely gallery with a good range of concessions - locals get a special rate so get someone from Hastings to take you! Staff are pleasant and engaging, and the building is deceptively large, which makes it a pleasure to explore. The miniature railway goes right by one of the rear windows which acts as an occasional extra surprise as well!
  • An excellent contemporary gallery on the seafront at Hastings. The cafeteria upstairs is very good as well.
  • I had such a nice day at this gallery. Beautiful building that houses some great art. Pick a good exhibition and it won't fail to impress, there is a room dedicated to the exhibition often with video and educational/background material. An excellent addition to the south coast arts scene.
  • We enjoyed our visit to the Gallery for the Exhibition, location, general design of the Gallery and facilities BUT were very disappointed with the food in the cafe, although the views wee sunning! The general standard of the food offered was poor, the service was perfunctory and it was expensive for what it was.
  • Sweet thanks
