#5 of 8 in Museums in Hastings
The Jerwood Gallery is a museum of contemporary British art located on The Stade in Hastings, East Sussex and is a not for profit organisation. The gallery opened in March 2012 and cost £4m to build. The gallery contains both temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection that includes work from artists including: L. S. Lowry, Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Walter Sickert, Ben Nicholson, Patrick Caulfield, Maggi Hambling, Craigie Aitchison and Prunella Clough.ArchitectureThe building was designed by Hana Loftus and Tom Grieve from the architecture firm HAT Projects. The outside of the gallery building is covered with over 8,000 black tiles that were glazed in Kent. In The Observer, the architecture critic Rowan Moore says that the Jerwood building "is not embarrassed by the stuff and clobber around it, and does not embarrass them". Moore concludes that the building is "a simple and straightforward place for viewing art".Wallpaper described the gallery as "a perfectly formed, modest space, that doesn't try too hard".

  • What a wonderful surprise to find the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings. Costs £9.00 per adult to enter in March 2018. Great and very varied display of various forms of art, fantastic. Small cafe upstairs o...  more »
  • We both enjoyed the exhibition, it was very unusual, with paintings which were very interesting to my 14yr-old daughter with poignant, often dark, detail. It's very expensive for a small gallery and i...  more »
  • We enjoyed our recent visit and were attracted to go in by the Paula Rego exhibition which is quite a coup for the gallery. It is quite expensive to go in (£9 I think but less if you are local) but it...  more »

  • We visited the Jerwood Gallery to view the Skin/Space /Stone Contemporary Dance in response to the works of Richard Long, choreographed by Sasha Roubicek and performed by dance artist Renee Stewart. We were lost in Renee’s journey of dance , brilliantly performed. We thoroughly enjoyed the hour spent in their studio amongst some great art work hanging on the walls also. We will certainly be returning for other performances. Hopefully we Will see more of Contemporary Dance at the Jerwood Gallery unfortunately we don’t see this type of dance often enough. We actually became members while visiting.
  • A purpose built gallery designed to match its neighbours, tar painted fishing net huts. Skylight windows provide good natural light to many parts. Its not very big but there is a cafe and of course toilets.
  • Such a lovely venue... Compact but light and airy. The curating is spot-on every time I've visited and the staff are helpful and welcoming. Quentin Blake was as amazing as always... He never fails to deliver! Definately worth a visit!
  • Disappointing. Maybe the exhibition wasn't that interesting to us but it wasn't well explained with not enough information. The space is really good, but the best peice of art was looking at the boats and the seagulls from the first floor window. The cafe had a range of food but again it was rather mediocre. I don't think they are trying hard enough to give value for the admission fee.
  • Expensive £9.00 adult entry. And not much to see once in there! Love the building design.
