  • Parked at the bottom end of the forest - was a two mile walk to the main car park. Lots of cyclists but room for everyone. Had a lovely time. It was nice and peaceful in the forest itself.  more »

  • It's a pleasure having this amazing forest close to home. Amazing mountain bike trails and community. Great upkeep and events that put a lot back into the forest.
  • Thought there would be more walkers trails very heavily aimed at cyclist. The one main route is the orange route but it requires a good fitness and it takes you on a 10 minute walk on a very much used 60 mile an hour road.... they need to make a path that just crosses the road over to the other part of forest. There is no warning for people with dogs and children that it's coming... Still I love it there so I've only knocked one star off.
  • We headed for Hamsterley with the intention of embarking on a short hike with the kids (11, 9), and were rewarded with a nice 4.5mi trek (the "orange" route) through some beautiful woodland. The walk featured some fairly challenging hills for the kids (and the parents!), and a gauntlet of midges along some stretches. For those unsure on their feet, some short parts downhill through knots of tree roots may prove more challenging, but overall it was all very doable.
  • Had a brilliant few days walking in these woods, some really nice routes. We did the longer horse route and really enjoyed it. Lots of places to bivi too if you can avoid the forestry commission 😉
  • Great place, it's just a pity the council charge so much for parking your car. £6 a day is a lot, especially when the council's are supposed to be encouraging people to get outdoors, exercise and enjoy the countryside. At £6 per visit I am inclined to go elsewhere where parking is free or much less, hence the 4 stars.
