Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester

4.8
#1 of 44 in Historic Sites in Cotswolds
A filming location for three Harry Potter films, Gloucester Cathedral is also one of England's most attractive cathedrals. Its foundation dates back to the establishment of an abbey here in the seventh century. Today you'll find a fine example of Gothic architecture. Take a guided tour to learn about the cathedral's intricate details, such as the Norman roof from the Early English period and the medieval glass in the east window. For views over the whole complex and out into Gloucester, walk the 269 steps to the top of the tower. The cathedral's renowned choir performs regularly, so check its schedule to hear a concert. You can also attend a religious service here. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Gloucester Cathedral by using our Gloucester trip itinerary builder.

  • Beautiful building. The architecture is amazing. Entry was free, which was a nice surprise! Well worth paying for a crypt tour if you get the chance!
  • The building and architecture is magnificent. Brings back wonderful memories of important ceremonies with echoes of prestige and history. The design intricacies of the stained glass windows have value in the individuals they commemorate detailed beneath in extravagant handwriting. The pillars support an immensely high ceiling which arches over the crypt chamber with many tapestries leading up to it. The tapestries are focused around tales from the time of Christ and the detail is unrelenting on all side chambers for worship and the organ. The floor is solid and tiling is patterned to match the ostentatious nature of the cathedral. The building exterior hints at designs within possessing seemingly insignificant sculptures balanced within tower walls. Members of the public were marvelling like us with pleasure on their self guided tours. It takes but a minute to walk past and forget all the man hours that must have been spent hand carving every crevice of each historical object. Each I am sure has it's own story I am currently too naive to know. Overall the interior of the buildings intricacies create just as much impact as the grandeur of the exterior and the building is the perfect host for many significant occasions whether morbid or celebratory.
