Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester

Must see · Church · Architectural Building
A filming location for three Harry Potter films, Gloucester Cathedral is also one of England's most attractive cathedrals. Its foundation dates back to the establishment of an abbey here in the seventh century. Today you'll find a fine example of Gothic architecture. Take a guided tour to learn about the cathedral's intricate details, such as the Norman roof from the Early English period and the medieval glass in the east window. For views over the whole complex and out into Gloucester, walk the 269 steps to the top of the tower. The cathedral's renowned choir performs regularly, so check its schedule to hear a concert. You can also attend a religious service here. Add Gloucester Cathedral to your Gloucester travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Gloucester trip itinerary website.

  • A jewel in any crown and a reason in itself, besides good pubs, to visit the ancient city. Stunning architecture; peaceful, inner, cloister garden; history by the bucketful; good cafe and decent non-historic toilets. There's an H Potter connection too, if you may have heard of him 😊
  • Beautiful cathedral, one of the best we have visited. Free entry. So much history and so much detail in the carvings as well as the beautiful stained glass windows. Well worth a visit. Highly recommended.
  • Gloucester Cathedral was one of the many landmarks I would walk through the grounds of every day on my walk to and from work for several years. Although I would end up taking it for granted, I have been in the cathedral itself on many occasions, and even for an atheist the architecture and atmosphere are spectacular. Also good for watching on TV to see if I can recognise which bit of it has been filmed - many production companies film here.
  • Great cathedral, very well looked after. Entrance is free but donations are welcome. You can freely walk around and even have a nice break in the courtyard. Area is perfect for sunny day.
  • The cathedral is beautiful and is worth going to see for the sights alone. Inside you'll be greeted and informed about the different things you can view inside. After making an optional charitable donation you are free to roam around, take in the sites and learn about some of the sites rich history. Myself and my partner were initially interested in the cathedral as it was a filming location for some of the Harry Potter movies but once we got there we also fell in love with the artwork and heritage of the site.
