Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester

4.8
A filming location for three Harry Potter films, Gloucester Cathedral is also one of England's most attractive cathedrals. Its foundation dates back to the establishment of an abbey here in the seventh century. Today you'll find a fine example of Gothic architecture. Take a guided tour to learn about the cathedral's intricate details, such as the Norman roof from the Early English period and the medieval glass in the east window. For views over the whole complex and out into Gloucester, walk the 269 steps to the top of the tower. The cathedral's renowned choir performs regularly, so check its schedule to hear a concert. You can also attend a religious service here. Add Gloucester Cathedral to your Gloucester travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Gloucester trip itinerary website .

  • This is a beautiful and historic place to visit. I do feel though that a little more information regarding the 'hidden gems' would be useful for example how many people realise that King Edward ii is ...  more »

  • Really pretty architectural building both inside and outside. The garden is really beautiful & the hall ways are stunning too. Plenty of glass paintings, wall statues & decorations to be witnessed. Some Harry Potter scenes have been recorded here. If you are around Gloucester, this is a must go place. Thanks.
  • We had the outstanding experience of going underneath the cathedral on a guided tour. There were only 6 people . We all were amazed . Richard the guide was a wealth of knowledge. As we went along we were able to ask questions.
  • Really beautiful building. Went at 9am on Sunday while the choir practiced for the service at 10.15. Had plenty of time to look around and enjoy. The stained glass at the back right side of the building was amazing.
  • Fantastic architecture and stunning place to visit. There is a lot of works going on around the outside grounds which you might want to wait for them to be finished. Inside is simply stunning, Harry potter fans will get there kicks from recognizing the halls and courtyard. There's a hidden Henson pig in the corridor for those looking, it might be Harry Trotter. Fantastic place to visit, I didn't have time to do the tour but it sounded really interesting.
  • If you're a fan of medieval and religious architecture, then don't miss Gloucester cathedral. It's definitely amongst the top English churches and can compare to the likes of York minster - in fact, the various historical tombs, etc which you can see here are amongst the best. My only criticism is that they charge for the right to take photos (although I feel that they don't do this simply to be greedy) A definite must see if you've got a few hours in Gloucester
